  • Jose Quintana SP | COL

Cubs' Jose Quintana: Blanks Mets over six innings

Quintana (6-4) blanked the Mets over six innings in Thursday's victory. He allowed three hits, issued two walks and struck out six to pick up the win.

Quintana looked strong Thursday in what was undoubtedly one of his best performances of the season. The southpaw struck out the side in the first inning and was able to wiggle his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the third. He cruised from there, retiring nine consecutive Mets before departing after six impressive innings of work. He'll take a 4.30 ERA into his upcoming Wednesday start against a Phillies team that will be without Rhys Hoskins (jaw).

  • Mets' Noah Syndergaard: Expects to miss one or two starts

Syndergaard (finger) said Thursday he expects to miss one or two starts, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Syndergaard hit the disabled list Tuesday -- although the move was retroactive to Saturday -- with a strained ligament in his right index finger, and believed he could spend the minimum 10 days on the DL. The 25-year-old missed his scheduled start Wednesday, and one or two more missed starts would likely bring a return around the second week of June.

  • Alex Wood RP | ATH

Dodgers' Alex Wood: Start pushed to Sunday

Wood will make his next start Sunday against the Rockies, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

With Kenta Maeda (hip) landing on the disabled list, the Dodgers opted to push Wood's start back to Sunday and go with a bullpen day for Friday's series opener in Colorado. The decision to push the lefty back was made in part due to health concerns, per DiGiovanna, as the leg cramps that have bothered him this season have lingered. Despite the reshuffling, Wood, who owns a 3.75 ERA across 11 starts this season, will still be forced to face a difficult Rockies lineup in hitter-friendly Coors Field.

  • Steven Matz RP | TB

Mets' Steven Matz: Plays catch Thursday

Matz (finger) felt well enough to play catch Thursday, James Wagner of The New York Times reports.

Matz exited Tuesday's start against the Braves with a slight strain of his left middle finger and remains questionable for his scheduled start Sunday against the Cubs. The left-hander playing catch is a good sign but doesn't indicate much for his Sunday availability. The Mets can ill afford his absence given the struggles of the back end of the rotation to go with Noah Syndergaard (finger) being on the disabled list.

  • Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw: Officially comes off DL

Kershaw (biceps) was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list ahead of Thursday's start against the Phillies.

Kershaw missed nearly an entire month dealing with biceps tendinitis. He's slated to make his first start since May 1 against Arizona, when he allowed two runs across six innings. Despite a 1-4 record, Kershaw sits with a 2.86 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 48 strikeouts across 44 innings.

  • Reds' Anthony DeSclafani: Tosses 95 pitches in rehab start

DeSclafani (oblique) covered 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk Wednesday in his rehab start for Triple-A Louisville. He struck out two batters in the outing.

DeSclafani has struggled to keep the ball in the yard over his last two rehab starts -- he allowed two home runs Wednesday and three in his previous turn -- but he's otherwise looked solid while working his way back from an oblique strain that first surfaced in March. The right-hander pushed his pitch count up to 95 on Wednesday, so it appears he's ready to handle a starter's workload with the big club if the Reds are comfortable bringing him off the 60-day disabled list. Given that the Reds already cleared a spot in their rotation by demoting Homer Bailey to the bullpen, it seems likely DeSclafani is being tabbed for the opening. DeSclafani could be activated from the DL and start as soon as Tuesday against the Rockies, which would mark the 28-year-old's first appearance with the big club since 2016.

  • Luis Castillo SP | CHW

Reds' Luis Castillo: Picking up start Sunday

Castillo will make his next start Sunday against the Padres, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic Cincinnati reports.

Castillo wasn't initially in line for two starts heading into the current week, but the Reds' pitching schedule changed after Homer Bailey was banished to the bullpen following another poor outing Monday against the Diamondbacks. Bailey had been in line to start the series finale in San Diego, but that assignment will now fall to Castillo with the Reds taking advantage of Thursday's off day to get by with a four-man rotation for the time being. The adjustment looks like a favorable one for Castillo, who now has the luxury of facing an anemic Padres offense at one of the pitcher-friendlier environments in all of baseball.

  • Austin Gomber SP | TEX

    Cardinals' Austin Gomber: Recalled Thursday

Gomber will head to the big leagues from Triple-A Memphis on Thursday.

Gomber received a promotion from Triple-A after posting a 3.60 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 63 strikeouts across 55 innings. Tyler O'Neill and John Gant were sent down to the minors in corresponding moves.

  • Dodgers' Ross Stripling: Stays hot with nine more strikeouts

Stripling (3-1) struck out nine and held the Phillies to just one run on four hits and two walks through seven innings to pick up the win Wednesday.

Stripling now has an absurd 28 strikeouts over his last three starts, with at least nine in each. All three, not coincidentally, have been wins. Ever since he was moved into the rotation in May, Stripling has been brilliant, with a 40:4 K:BB and 1.24 ERA over 29 innings. Stripling induced at least three swinging strikes with all four of his pitches (four-seamer, changeup, slider and knuckle-curve), and that kind of diverse arsenal is tough for any hitter to deal with. Stripling's next turn will come Tuesday against the Pirates.

  • Zach Eflin SP | BAL

Phillies' Zach Eflin: Gives up five earned in second straight loss

Eflin allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk despite five strikeouts over four innings in a loss Wednesday to the Dodgers.

Eflin was touched up for a pair of home runs that accounted for three of the five runs he allowed. He also allowed a home run in his previous start. After starting his campaign with two quality starts, Eflin has now failed to complete the fifth inning three times in a row. His breaking and off-speed pitches had nothing Wednesday night, as his changeup, slider and curveball were put in play five times for four hits. His fastball is excellent, but he needs other pitches to play off of it. Eflin will get a chance to turn things around Tuesday against the Cubs.
