  • Kolby Allard SP | PHI

Phillies' Kolby Allard: Recalled ahead of start

The Phillies recalled Allard from Triple-A Lehigh Valley ahead of his start Saturday against the Mets.

Through four appearances (three starts) in the majors this season, Allard has posted a 3.50 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across 18 innings, and he'll now be asked to fill the fifth spot in Philadelphia's rotation following the departure of Seth Johnson from the active roster earlier this week. The 27-year-old Allard will match up against a Mets offense that owns the 10th-best OPS in the majors.

  • Austin Gomber SP | COL

Rockies' Austin Gomber: Third straight quality start

Gomber came away with a no-decision in Friday's 9-5 win over the Cubs, allowing two runs on nine hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out four.

The southpaw produced his third straight quality start and 12th of the season, tying the career high he set in 2023, but Gomber saw his sixth win of the year slip away when the Colorado bullpen coughed up the lead in the top of the eighth inning. The 30-year-old has been sharp since the beginning of August, delivering six QS in eight trips to the mound while posting a 3.67 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 34:10 K:BB through 49 innings. Gomber will look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Diamondbacks.

  • Javier Assad SP | CHC

Cubs' Javier Assad: Escapes Coors with no-decision

Assad came away with a no-decision in Friday's 9-5 loss to the Rockies, giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out five.

The big blow off Assad came in the second inning when Hunter Goodman launched a two-run homer, but the right-hander otherwise minimized the damage and got taken off the hook for the loss when the Cubs tied the game in the top of the eighth. Assad hadn't been tagged with more than three runs in an outing since June 23, and over his last 10 starts he sports a 3.27 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 37:24 K:BB through 52.1 innings. He'll look for a better result in his next trip to the mound, which lines up to come at home next week against the A's.

  • Rockies' Antonio Senzatela: Making 2024 debut Monday

Senzatela (elbow) will be activated from the 60-day injured list to start Monday's game against the Diamondbacks at Coors Field, MLB.com reports.

Senzatela has been on the IL all season while recovering from the Tommy John surgery he underwent last July, but after completing his lengthy rehab process, he appears poised to make two or three starts with the Rockies before the 2024 campaign comes to a close. Manager Bud Black said that there will be a "harness" on Senzatela in his 2024 debut Monday, so the right-hander likely won't be asked to throw much more than 70 pitches against Arizona. Over the course of his five rehab outings between stops at High-A Spokane and Double-A Hartford, Senzatela maxed out at 68 pitches and posted a 5.29 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 18:4 K:BB across 17 innings.

  • Merrill Kelly SP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly: Could start early next week

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Friday that Kelly (hamstring) could start Monday or Tuesday against the Rockies in Colorado, ArizonaSports.com reports.

Lovullo said Kelly was doing better Friday, and if that trend continues, the right-hander will be ready to take his next turn through the rotation. Kelly was pulled from his previous start Wednesday against the Rangers with right hamstring cramps.

  • Tylor Megill SP | NYM

Mets' Tylor Megill: Next start coming Tuesday

Megill is expected to make his next start Tuesday against the Nationals at Citi Field, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.

Though Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that Megill would stick in the rotation after striking out nine over six shutout innings Monday against the Blue Jays, the right-hander will have to wait more than a week to make his next turn. While Megill would be on normal rest for Saturday's game in Philadelphia or five days' rest for Sunday's series finale, the Mets are instead realigning their rotation to have Luis Severino and David Peterson start those respective games. The shuffling will allow the team's top pitcher, Sean Manaea, to start every five days down the stretch, as the Mets push for a wild-card spot. Manaea will take the hill for Monday's series opener versus the Nationals and will be followed by Megill and Jose Quintana, on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Manaea and Megill will both be on track for two-start weeks, with the two lining up for starts in next weekend's home series versus the Phillies.

  • Martin Perez SP | SD

Padres' Martin Perez: In line to start Sunday

Perez (personal) is listed as the Padres' probable starting pitcher for Sunday's game against the Giants in San Francisco.

Perez has missed the Padres' last two games after being placed on the paternity list Wednesday, and while he could remain away from the team for Saturday's contest as well, he looks poised to rejoin the club for the series finale at Oracle Park. Since coming over in a deal with the Pirates at the trade deadline, Perez has turned in a 2.84 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 33:11 K:BB in 38 innings over his seven outings with San Diego.

  • Cal Quantrill SP | COL

Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Trending toward Sunday return

Quantrill (triceps) is expected to return from the 15-day injured list to start Sunday's game against the Cubs at Coors Field, MLB.com reports.

Quantrill was placed on the IL with right triceps inflammation on Sept. 1, one day after he was scratched from his scheduled start against the Orioles. He looks like he'll be ready to return to action in close to the minimum 15 days, and he didn't require a rehab assignment after the Rockies were encouraged by how the right-hander fared during his throwing program. That being said, manager Bud Black suggested that Quantrill will have his workload monitored carefully Sunday, with 70-to-85 pitches floated as a rough estimate.

  • Dylan Cease SP | SD

Padres' Dylan Cease: Strikes out 10 in win

Cease (13-11) allowed four hits and two walks while striking out 10 over six shutout innings to earn the win Friday over the Giants.

Cease had allowed at least three runs in each of his last six starts before turning in this excellent performance. This was his fifth start of the year with double-digit strikeouts. Cease is now at a 3.58 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 215:62 K:BB through 176 innings over 31 starts this year. His next start is lined up to come at home versus the Astros.

  • Logan Webb SP | SF

Giants' Logan Webb: Short start in loss

Webb (12-10) allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over four innings to take the loss Friday versus the Padres.

Webb failed to complete five innings for the first time since May 5. With the Giants essentially out of playoff contention, it appears manager Bob Melvin won't ask for too much of Webb down the stretch, especially since the ace has hit a rough patch with 17 runs allowed (16 earned) on 29 hits and six walks over his last 21 innings. The right-hander is now at a 3.53 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 161:47 K:BB through a major-league-leading 193.2 innings over 31 starts. Webb's next start is set to come on the road, but it's unclear if it'll be in Baltimore or Kansas City, as the Giants could get Robbie Ray (hamstring) back some time next week.
