  • Alek Manoah RP | LAA

Angels' Alek Manoah: Outrighted to minors

The Angels outrighted Manoah to Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday.

Manoah had been optioned to Triple-A on Sunday, but the Angels evidently designated the right-hander for assignment at some point thereafter. He cleared waivers and will now remain in the organization as starting depth at Salt Lake. Before being sent back to the minors, Manoah made three relief appearances for the Angels, posting a 9.82 ERA, 2.18 WHIP and 5:8 K:BB in 7.1 innings.

  • Ryan Johnson SP | LAA

Angels' Ryan Johnson: Moved down to Double-A

The Angels optioned Johnson to Double-A Rocket City following Tuesday's 14-6 loss to the Athletics.

Johnson has allowed eight runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three batters in five innings across his three outings since being reinstated from the 15-day IL on May 13. He'll head down to Double-A to work on his command issues, with the Angels recalling southpaw Tayler Saucedo from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move.

  • Jose Berrios SP | TOR

Blue Jays' Jose Berrios: Undergoes Tommy John surgery

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said that Berrios underwent full Tommy John surgery Wednesday in addition to having a stress fracture repaired, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.

The Blue Jays and Berrios went into the operation unsure whether the pitcher would require a ligament repair, and as it turns out he required a full UCL procedure. Berrios has been sidelined all season with elbow problems and will now likely be shelved until at least the second half of the 2027 campaign.

  • Joe Ryan SP | MIN

Twins' Joe Ryan: Sharp in third win

Ryan (3-3) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing one run on four hits over six innings in a 4-1 victory over the Astros. He struck out nine without walking a batter.

The nine Ks were a season high for Ryan, as the right-hander delivered his third straight quality start and his sixth of the year on 99 pitches (71 strikes). Ryan has given up more than two runs only twice in 11 outings, and he'll take a 3.02 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 61:14 K:BB through 56.2 innings into his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week against the White Sox.

  • Astros' Mike Burrows: Hit hard in Wednesday's loss

Burrows (2-6) took the loss Wednesday as the Astros fell 4-1 to the Twins, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out two.

The right-hander didn't get much support from the Houston offense, but Burrows also got hit hard as half the hits off him went for extra bases, including homers by Victor Caratini and Ryan Kreidler. It's the second straight start in which he's served up multiple long balls and the fifth time in 10 outings on the season. Burrows will carry a 5.75 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 48:20 K:BB through 56.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come up next week during a road series against the Rangers.

  • Steven Matz SP | TB

Rays' Steven Matz: Works in tandem in return

Matz didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks over four innings in the Rays' 5-3 victory over the Orioles. He struck out five.

Making his first start since May 3 after recovering from a bout of elbow inflammation, Matz was lifted after 67 pitches (41 strikes) and wound up working in a tandem arrangement with Jesse Scholtens, who got the win while tossing four innings of relief. Matz wasn't expected to have any significant workload restrictions, so it's not clear if he'll continue to piggyback with Scholtens, or if Tampa Bay will shift to a six-man rotation. Regardless of his role or when his next outing will happen, Matz's 3.70 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 33:15 K:BB through 41.1 innings on the season will give him some fantasy appeal in deeper formats.

  • Shane Baz SP | BAL

Orioles' Shane Baz: Strong start wasted Wednesday

Baz didn't factor into the decision Wednesday as the Orioles were downed 5-3 by the Rays, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out six.

The right-hander delivered his second straight quality start on 94 pitches (57 strikes), and Baz left the mound in line for his second win of the season, but the Baltimore bullpen couldn't close things out. Baz is still struggling to find the strike zone, however, and he's issued at least three free passes in four straight outings. He'll take a 4.87 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 48:25 K:BB through 57.1 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come at home early next week in a rematch with Tampa Bay.

  • Aaron Nola SP | PHI

Phillies' Aaron Nola: Stuck with fourth loss

Nola (2-4) took the loss Wednesday as the Phillies fell 9-4 to the Reds, giving up four runs on eight hits over five innings. He struck out five without walking a batter.

The veteran right-hander got tagged for three runs in the second inning, and while he left the mound after 77 pitches (55 strikes) without any homers or free passes allowed, the Phillies weren't able to climb out of that early hole. Nola has failed to record an out in the sixth inning in six of his last seven starts, and last year's struggles (6.01 ERA and 1.35 WHIP in 17 regular-season starts) may have simply been a harbinger of further decline. Nola will take a 6.04 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 51:18 K:BB through 50.2 innings into his next outing, which should come on the road early next week in San Diego.

  • Andrew Abbott SP | CIN

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Collects fourth win

Abbott (4-2) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks over 5.1 innings during a 9-4 victory over the Phillies. He struck out three.

The southpaw dealt with traffic on the bases in every inning before finally being lifted after 96 pitches (64 strikes) following a solo shot by Alec Bohm, but the Reds gave Abbott more than enough run support to record his third straight win and fourth consecutive winning decision. He's given up two earned runs or fewer in all five of his outings during that latter stretch, posting a 1.29 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 19:13 K:BB over his last 28 innings. Abbott will look to keep rolling in his next start, which lines up to come on the road early next week against the Mets.

  • Rockies' Chase Dollander: Shut down for 2-to-3 weeks

Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said Wednesday that Dollander (elbow) will be shut down from throwing for the next 2-to-3 weeks, MLB.com reports.

Dollander landed on the 15-day injured list last week due to a right elbow sprain. He will opt for a rest-and-rehab treatment plan for the time being, though it will take a while for Dollander to rebuild his stamina following the shutdown period. A timetable for Dollander's return won't become clearer until he starts ramping up his throwing again.
