Astros' Carlos Correa: Out 6-8 weeks with torn thumb ligament

Correa was placed on the 10-day DL on Tuesday with a torn ligament in his left thumb and is expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks.

This is a huge blow, as the earliest Correa will be able to return is September, and Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports that he might need surgery, but nothing has been determined yet on that front. The Astros are saying publicly that they expect Correa to return for the stretch run. Colin Moran was recalled from Triple-A Fresno to take his place on the active roster, and now Marwin Gonzalez and Alex Bregman will be tasked with handling the shortstop workload while Correa is out.

  • Red Sox's Xander Bogaerts: Scratched from Tuesday's lineup

Bogaerts was scratched from Tuesday's lineup against the Blue Jays, Ryan Hannable of WEEI.com reports.

It is unclear why Bogaerts was scratched. This news overshadows the already noteworthy fact that Bogaerts was slated to bat sixth amid a slump in which he is hitting .167/.250/.217 with a 29.4 percent strikeout rate over his last 60 at-bats. He had not hit lower than third since May 5. His value is trending in the wrong direction now for several reasons, as he is likely dealing with some sort of ailment.

  • Red Sox's Xander Bogaerts: Batting sixth amid slump

Bogaerts is batting sixth Tuesday against the Blue Jays, Tim Britton of The Providence Journal reports.

He has not hit lower than third in the order since May 5, so this could result in a slight shift in his value if it becomes a trend. Bogaerts would presumably hit ahead of Chris Young, who is batting fifth, if a righty was on the hill, but it's possible he could be out of the three hole indefinitely. Bogaerts is hitting .167/.250/.217 with one home run and a 29.4 percent strikeout rate in his last 60 at-bats.

Astros' Carlos Correa: Will be evaluated Tuesday

Correa will be re-evaluated Tuesday after leaving Monday's game with what was then described as a jammed left thumb, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Correa appeared to aggravate a thumb injury first sustained July 4. The young shortstop was hoping the pain he felt that night against the Braves would go away over the All-Star break, but the pain lingered. Expect the Astros to proceed with caution. Marwin Gonzalez is the most likely fill-in shortstop should Correa be forced to miss some time.

Astros' Carlos Correa: Thumb injury causes exit

Correa left Monday's game with a jammed left thumb.

Correa exited in the bottom of the fourth inning and will be reevaluated Tuesday. The 22-year-old looks as though he has avoided serious injury, but it would not be surprising if the Astros were extra cautious with their young shortstop. Correa missed one game with a similar injury just before the All-Star break, but it remains to be seen whether this is an aggravation of that ailment.

Astros' Carlos Correa: Exits with apparent hand/wrist injury

Correa exited Monday's game against the Mariners with what appeared to be a left hand/wrist injury, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Correa appeared to be in immediate pain after taking a swing in the bottom of the fourth inning. The star shortstop was attended to by the team's trainer and was subsequently removed from the game. An update on his condition should become available shortly.

  • Angels' Cliff Pennington: Likely platoon candidate at second

Pennington is expected to enter a platoon at second base with Nick Franklin following Danny Espinosa's designation for assignment Sunday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

The Angels have received limited production from the keystone this season, so they were forced to cut ties with one of the three options they had been deploying there. Pennington was already seeing a couple starts per week, so being on the short side of a platoon doesn't move his fantasy value much. That said, with one less dog in the race, the veteran infielder could carve out a bigger role if he can outproduce Franklin, who's experiencing struggles of his own at the dish.

  • Indians' Francisco Lindor: Enjoys four-hit day against A's

Lindor went 4-for-4 with three doubles and scored a run in a losing effort Sunday against the Athletics.

Lindor's 28 doubles lead all MLB shortstops and sit just two shy of last year's career-high mark. Now in his third big-league season, the 23-year-old is well on his way to setting the bar for future campaigns in a number of categories. However, Lindor's 2017 has its blemishes, including a career-low .249 batting average and .308 on-base percentage -- not to mention a befuddling lack of aggressiveness on the bases.

  • Ehire Adrianza 3B | LAA

Twins' Ehire Adrianza: Homers in Houston

Adrianza went 2-for-3 with a solo home run Sunday in Houston.

Adrianza's third-inning long ball off Mike Fiers was his first in 29 games played this season and fourth in 183 career contests. The light-hitting middle infielder remains a fantasy afterthought despite this performance.

  • Red Sox's Xander Bogaerts: Out of lineup for Game 2

Bogaerts is not in the lineup for the second game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Yankees, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Bogaerts will take a seat after going 0-for-3 with a walk during Game 1. The shortstop has played 34 innings since the series started on Friday night, so this should come as no surprise that manager John Farrell decided to give Bogaerts the night off. In his place, Tzu-Wei Lin slides over to short while Brock Holt gets the start at the hot corner.
