Oneil Cruz SS | PIT
Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Cracks four hits in losing effort
Cruz went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Tuesday's 9-5 loss to the Cubs.
The 25-year-old drew a start at designated hitter and collected his second four-hit performance of the season, with his first being a 5-for-5 effort on Aug. 2. Cruz has been red hot in August, hitting .383 (31-for-81) with a home run, a triple, eight doubles, 11 RBI and nine runs scored across 22 games. Overall, he is now slashing .271/.328/.473 with 18 homers and steals apiece in 488 plate appearances this season.

Matt McLain SS | CIN
Reds' Matt McLain: Still undergoing tests
Reds manager David Bell said Tuesday that McLain (shoulder/rib) is still undergoing tests to determine the cause of the pain in his side, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
McLain encountered a roadblock in his recovery from left shoulder surgery when he went down with a stress reaction in his rib cage earlier this month. He had resumed baseball activities but evidently at some point was shut down again. Bell noted that the testing McLain is going through is nearly finished and the infielder could resume swinging a bat again soon. There could still be time for McLain to make it back before the end of the season, but he can't afford any more setbacks.

Ezequiel Tovar SS | COL
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Back in action Tuesday
Tovar (sports hernia) will start at shortstop and bat second in Tuesday's game versus the Marlins.
Tovar missed Monday's game while dealing with a sports hernia, but it wound up being just a one-day absence. The 23-year-old has struggled so far in August with just a .482 OPS.

Ha-seong Kim 2B | ATL
Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Joining team on road this week
Padres manager Mike Shildt said Monday on 97.3 The Fan that Kim (shoulder) is slated to join the club in St. Louis on Tuesday.
Shildt noted that Kim was scheduled to have his injured right shoulder examined again Monday, and presuming everything looks OK, the infielder would then rejoin the club on the road. It's not clear what the next step would be, but it would likely include the resumption of baseball activities. Kim is first eligible to return from the 10-day injured list Thursday, but it's uncertain whether he might have a shot to be back by that date.

Masyn Winn SS | STL
Cardinals' Masyn Winn: On base four times in loss
Winn went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored in Monday's 7-4 loss to the Padres.
Winn was an effective table-setter Monday, scoring twice on hits by Alec Burleson as the Cardinals got three-hit efforts from the first two batters in the lineup. Over his last 11 games, Winn has gone 17-for-47 (.362) with four extra-base hits. The shortstop continues to impress in his first full season, maintaining a .282/.329/.420 slash line with 11 home runs, 10 stolen bases, 46 RBI, 63 runs scored, 23 doubles and four triples through 122 contests.

Tristan Gray SS | MIN
Marlins' Tristan Gray: Cast off 40-man roster
The Marlins designated Gray for assignment Sunday.
Gray lost his spot on the 40-man roster to right-hander Mike Baumann, whom the Marlins claimed off waivers from the Angels on Sunday. A 28-year-old infielder, Gray received brief cups of coffee with the Marlins in May and June but has otherwise spent the entire 2024 campaign at Triple-A Jacksonville, slashing .240/.312/.454 with 17 home runs over 410 plate appearances.

Ezequiel Tovar SS | COL
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Expected back Tuesday
Tovar, who was given the day off Monday while dealing with a sports hernia, is expected to be in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Marlins, Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com reports.
The Rockies failed to disclose much about Tovar's issue prior to this point, which could be one of the causes for his struggles at the dish so far in August. However, the issue shouldn't force the 23-year-old shortstop to miss additional time assuming he feels ready to play ahead of Tuesday's matchup.

Dansby Swanson SS | CHC
Cubs' Dansby Swanson: Blasts grand slam Monday
Swanson went 1-for-3 with a walk, a grand slam and an additional run scored in Monday's 18-8 win over the Pirates.
Swanson's grand slam in the sixth inning was part of an eight-run frame for the Cubs as the team broke things open. The shortstop is now up to 11 long balls this season, including two in his last seven contests. Swanson hit at least 20 homers in each of the last three years, so he'll need to really heat up down the stretch to reach that plateau once again.

Ezequiel Tovar SS | COL
Rockies' Ezequiel Tovar: Riding pine Monday
Tovar is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins.
Aaron Schunk will handle shortstop duties for the Rockies while Tovar retreats to the bench after starting each of the past six games. Tovar recorded three doubles during the Rockies' series with the Yankees over the weekend, but he's largely floundered at the plate in August, slashing just .178/.204/.278 with a 34 percent strikeout rate and limited counting stats (one home run, no stolen bases, 11 runs, three RBI) through 21 games this month.

Xavier Edwards 2B | MIA
Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Goes on IL with sore back
The Marlins placed Edwards on the 10-day injured list due to mild back extensor soreness.
Edwards missed the final two games of the Marlins' series against the Cubs over the weekend with the back issue, and though an MRI on Sunday returned negative, the team will err on the side of caution and deactivate him. Before landing on the IL, Edwards was able to take some swings and do some throwing on the field Sunday, so he could have a chance at returning from the IL when first eligible Sept. 3. Vidal Brujan is expected to serve as the Marlins' primary shortstop in place of Edwards, who had slashed .356/.432/.442 with 10 extra-base hits and 22 stolen bases since moving into a full-time role at the beginning of July.
