  • Mookie Betts SS | LAD

Dodgers' Mookie Betts: Homer, double in win

Betts went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a double in Friday's 7-6 win over the Cardinals.

Betts has logged multiple hits in each of his four starts since he returned from a hand injury. Over his last five games, he's gone 8-for-20 (.400) with two homers and four RBI. Betts' power was down even before the injury, but he's still slugging .505 over 77 contests this season. He's added a .310 batting average, 12 homers, 44 RBI, 54 runs scored and 10 stolen bases.

  • Bobby Witt SS | KC

Royals' Bobby Witt: Three more hits, homer in win

Witt went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and three total runs scored in Friday's 7-1 win over the Reds.

Witt continues to put up MVP-caliber numbers -- the shortstop has five homers in his last seven games while going 12-for-26 (.462) in that span. Witt leads the majors with a .352 batting average to go along with a 1.021 OPS, 25 homers, 90 RBI, 105 runs scored and 25 stolen bases through 537 plate appearances this season.

  • Oneil Cruz SS | PIT

Pirates' Oneil Cruz: Exits with ankle injury

Cruz was removed from Friday's game against the Mariners due to left ankle discomfort.

Cruz made a big turn toward third base after lining a two-RBI double into center field during the seventh inning, and he pivoted awkwardly on his ankle while turning back to second. The Pirates' medical staff is still in the process of examining his ankle, and the 25-year-old's status for Saturday's game is uncertain.

  • Brayan Rocchio SS | CLE

Guardians' Brayan Rocchio: Absent from lineup

Rocchio is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Brewers.

Rocchio will begin Friday's game in the dugout after going 1-for-7 with an RBI over his last two outings. Daniel Schneemann will start at shortstop and bat eight against Milwaukee right-hander Aaron Civale.

  • Aledmys Diaz 1B | HOU

    Aledmys Diaz: Released by Astros

The Astros released Diaz on Friday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Roughly a month after reuniting with Houston, Diaz will now be let go in order to make room for Shay Whitcomb, who was promoted from Triple-A in a corresponding move. The 34-year-old Diaz appeared in only two games while with the Astros, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. He'll now presumably look to latch on with another organization on a minor-league deal.

  • Matt McLain SS | CIN

Reds' Matt McLain: Resuming baseball activities

McLain (shoulder/rib) has been cleared to resume baseball work, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Mclain's recovery from offseason surgery on his left shoulder was derailed in early August when he sustained a stress reaction in his rib cage. He was temporarily shut down from baseball activities and a rehab assignment scheduled to begin Aug. 12 was cancelled. However, he's back to swinging a bat and participating in other drills. The Reds haven't announced a new date for McLain to start his minor-league rehab assignment, and he shouldn't be expected back until September.

  • Shay Whitcomb 3B | HOU

Astros' Shay Whitcomb: Contract selected ahead of debut

The Astros selected Whitcomb's contract from Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Whitcomb has slashed .293/.378/.530 slash line in 108 games with Sugar Land this season, popping 25 home runs and stealing 26 bases along the way, and he led the entire minors leagues with 35 homers in 2023. He can play all over the infield and has also been used some in the outfield this year. Whitcomb could initially see his reps at third base with Alex Bregman (elbow) banged up, but first base is another option since it's been a weak spot for the Astros. The 25-year-old is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus the White Sox.

  • Trey Sweeney SS | DET

Tigers' Trey Sweeney: Contract selected ahead of debut

The Tigers selected Sweeney's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Friday.

Acquired from the Dodgers in last month's Jack Flaherty trade, Sweeney has slashed .267/.345/.450 with 15 home runs and 20 stolen bases over 107 contests at the Triple-A level this season. The 24-year-old has played shortstop almost exclusively in the minors and should see most of the reps there against right-handers, with Javier Baez perhaps limited to a short-side platoon.

  • Orioles' Gunnar Henderson: Goes deep in Thursday's win

Henderson went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Thursday's 5-1 win over the Red Sox.

After being stuck at 29 homers for seven games, Henderson has smacked a long ball in consecutive contests. He's up to 31 homers this season, though he's hit just five of them since the start of July. Even with less power, he's been productive -- he's batting .321 (17-for-53) in August and has a fantastic .289/.374/.558 slash line with 73 RBI, 96 runs scored, 23 doubles, six triples and 14 stolen bases through 120 contests overall.

  • Bo Bichette SS | TOR

Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Resumes baseball activities

Bichette (calf) has resumed baseball activities at the Blue Jays' spring training complex in Florida, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.

Bichette will remain in Florida for a while to ramp back up before the Blue Jays consider a rehab assignment, so he looks to be multiple weeks away from a return. Leo Jimenez has been filling in at shortstop since Bichette was sidelined in late July with a moderate right calf strain.
