  • Ben Rice 1B | NYY

Yankees' Ben Rice: Gets company at 1B in Goldschmidt

Rice is slated to be the Yankees' primary first baseman in 2026, but Paul Goldschmidt -- who the team re-signed Friday -- is expected to frequently start at the position against lefty pitchers, Randy Miller of NJ.com reports.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said back in December that he expects Rice to play "a lot" against lefties this season, but New York's decision to bring back Goldschmidt -- who posted a standout .981 OPS against southpaws last year -- complicates matters. It doesn't necessarily mean that Rice will always sit against all left-handed starters; for those games, he could frequently move behind the plate to give fellow lefty hitter Austin Wells a break, and Rice may also be given turns at DH. With that in mind, fantasy managers need not downgrade Rice's outlook significantly, as Boone figures to get Rice's bat into the lineup on a near-everyday basis as long as he's hitting well. For those who roster Rice in dynasty and keeper leagues, the signing of Goldschmidt may end up being a good thing if it means Rice is able to maintain catcher eligibility beyond 2026.

  • Mike Vasil P | CHW

White Sox's Mike Vasil: Will compete for rotation role

Vasil is stretching out as a starter and will compete for a rotation spot this spring, he recently said on the Baseball isn't Boring Podcast.

Vasil made three traditional starts in 2025 but primarily worked as a multi-inning reliever. He allowed eight earned runs across 11 innings as a starter, and he also had a 12.3 percent walk rate across 101 total innings. Those factors suggest Vasil might be best suited to stick in a relief role, but he'll have the chance to prove otherwise this spring.

  • Yankees' Paul Goldschmidt: Back in pinstripes

Goldschmidt signed a one-year contract with the Yankees on Friday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Goldschmidt was underwhelming overall during his first season in the Bronx but excelled against southpaws, slashing .336/.411/.570 across 168 regular-season plate appearances against lefties in 2025. The Yankees likely plan to take advantage of his dominance versus left-handers and use the 38-year-old in the short side of a platoon with Ben Rice at first base.

  • Scott Barlow RP | ATH

Athletics' Scott Barlow: Nets one-year deal with Athletics

The Athletics signed Barlow to a one-year, $2 million contract Friday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

He will have the opportunity to earn an additional $1.3 million in incentives. Barlow spent the 2025 season with the Reds, finishing the regular season with a 4.21 ERA and 75:45 K:BB over 68.1 innings. The 33-year-old hasn't had an ERA below 4.21 or WHIP below 1.36 since 2022, but with 59 career saves, Barlow has easily the most closer experience on the Athletics' roster. That alone should put him in the mix for saves, but even if Barlow wins the job, he will be a poor bet to retain it.

  • Brett Wisely 2B | ATL

Rays' Brett Wisely: DFA'd by Rays

The Rays designated Wisely for assignment Friday.

Tampa Bay acquired Victor Mesa from the Marlins via trade. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, Wisely was designated for assignment. The 26-year-old spent time with San Francisco and Atlanta last season, appearing in 26 MLB games and posting a .594 OPS. He slashed .253/.332/.387 across 342 plate appearances with the Giants' Triple-A affiliate in 2025.

  • Weston Wilson LF | BAL

Orioles' Weston Wilson: Outrighted to Triple-A

The Orioles outrighted Wilson to Triple-A Norfolk on Friday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Wilson passed through waivers unclaimed after being removed from the 40-man roster Sunday. He will remain in the organization and likely net a non-roster invitation to spring training. Wilson hit .198/.282/.369 in 52 regular-season games for the Phillies in 2025.

  • Brent Suter RP | LAA

Angels' Brent Suter: Latches on with Angels

The Angels signed Suter to a one-year, $1.25 million major-league contract Friday, Taylor Blake Ward of Baseball America reports.

Suter will join the Halos for the 2026 season after spending the last two years in Cincinnati. The 36-year-old reliever appeared in 48 games with the Reds last season, posting a 4.52 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 53:18 K:BB across 67.2 regular-season innings. He's the fourth significant addition to the Angels' bullpen this offseason, as the team already added Jordan Romano, Drew Pomeranz and Kirby Yates through free agency.

  • Kaleb Ort RP | LAA

Angels' Kaleb Ort: Booted from 40-man roster

The Angels designated Ort (elbow) for assignment Friday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Brent Suter. Ort has been in three organizations already this offseason and could make it a fourth if he's claimed off waivers. He missed the final month of last season with an elbow injury and it's unclear whether he's fully healthy.

  • Red Sox's Tsung-Che Cheng: Goes to Boston via waivers

The Red Sox claimed Cheng off waivers from the Nationals on Friday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

It's the fifth organization Cheng has been in this offseason, as he has been bouncing around all winter via waivers. The 24-year-old went hitless in seven plate appearances during a cup of coffee in the majors and slashed only .209/.307/.271 at Triple-A Indianapolis in the Pirates organization last season, but he's known for a reliable infield glove.

  • Drew Romo C | CHW

White Sox's Drew Romo: Receives outright assignment

Romo cleared waivers Friday and has been outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte while receiving a non-roster invite to spring training, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.

Romo was designated for assignment Sunday, and after clearing waivers, he'll remain within the organization. The 24-year-old catcher will join the White Sox at spring training as a non-roster invitee. Romo spent most of the 2025 season with the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque, where he slashed .264/329/.409 with seven homers, 23 RBI, 28 runs scored and two stolen bases across 244 plate appearances.
