Dodgers' Will Smith: Checks out well after swinging bat

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that Smith (hand) responded well to taking swings in the batting cage Saturday, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports.

The Dodgers aren't closing the door on Smith being available for the team's three-game wild-card series that begins Tuesday, but Roberts noted that the catcher's availability would be contingent on him taking live at-bats Monday without issue. If the Dodgers opt to hold Smith out for the opening round of the playoffs, Ben Rortvedt and Dalton Rushing would serve as their options behind the plate. Smith has been on the shelf since Sept. 13 due to a hairline fracture in his right hand.

Dodgers' Max Muncy: Expected back for wild-card round

Manager Dave Roberts said that he expects Muncy (lower body) to return to the lineup Tuesday for the first game of the Dodgers' wild-card series, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

Enrique Hernandez picked up the start at third base for Sunday's regular-season finale in Seattle, but Muncy looks like he'll be ready to go for the start of the Dodgers' playoff run after lower-body soreness has kept him from playing since Wednesday. Injuries limited the 35-year-old to 100 games during the regular season, with Muncy slashing .243/.376/.470 with 19 home runs, four steals, 67 RBI and 48 runs across 388 plate appearances.

  • Kyle Hart SP | SD

Padres' Kyle Hart: Heads back to minors

The Padres optioned Hart to the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on Sunday.

Hart will cede his spot on the 28-man active roster to lefty JP Sears, who was recalled from El Paso to start Sunday's regular-season finale versus the Diamondbacks. Over 20 appearances (six starts) for the Padres on the season, Hart went 3-3 with a 5.86 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 37:13 K:BB in 43 innings.

  • JP Sears SP | SD

Padres' JP Sears: Recalled ahead of start

The Padres recalled Sears from Triple-A El Paso ahead of his scheduled start Sunday versus the Diamondbacks in San Diego.

San Diego optioned lefty Kyle Hart to the minors to clear room on the 28-man active roster for Sears. The southpaw isn't expected to be included on the Padres' postseason roster, as he was called up Sunday to afford the other members of the rotation some extra rest in advance of the wild-card series with the Cubs.

  • Joseph Ortiz 2B | MIL

Brewers' Joey Ortiz: Taking seat Sunday

Ortiz is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds.

Andruw Monasterio will receive the nod at shortstop in place of Ortiz in the regular-season finale. Unless he's called upon off the bench, Ortiz will finish his third big-league campaign with a .231 average, seven home runs, 14 stolen bases, 45 RBI and 62 runs in 148 games.

  • Brewers' William Contreras: Receiving afternoon off

Contreras is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds.

With the Brewers having secured baseball's top record heading into the regular-season finale, Contreras will receive a second straight day off ahead of what Milwaukee hopes will be an extended playoff run. Danny Jansen will handle catching duties for Milwaukee.

  • Reds' Tyler Stephenson: Idle for regular-season finale

Stephenson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers.

Stephenson will receive a breather for the regular-season finale after he started behind the plate the last two days. Jose Trevino will handle catching duties Sunday.

  • Giants' Casey Schmitt: Idle Sunday

Schmitt is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.

Schmitt will take a seat to close out the season after he had started each of the previous three games. Christian Koss will fill in for Schmitt at the keystone and will bat eighth.

  • Giants' Bryce Eldridge: Taking seat Sunday

Eldridge is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies.

Eldridge will close out the season with consecutive absences from the lineup as the Giants go with Rafael Devers at designated hitter and Wilmer Flores at first base. Since receiving a call-up from Triple-A Sacramento on Sept. 15, Eldridge has hit just .115 with a 35.3 percent strikeout rate over 34 plate appearances.

  • Mickey Moniak CF | COL

Rockies' Mickey Moniak: Idle for third straight game

Moniak is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants.

The Rockies haven't announced that Moniak is dealing with an injury, but he'll nonetheless close out the season with three consecutive absences from the lineup. Yanquiel Fernandez will draw another start in right field in place of Moniak, who has compiled a .270 batting average with 24 home runs, nine stolen bases, 68 RBI and 62 runs in 135 games on the campaign.
