The Broncos released Purcell on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Purcell underwent knee surgery during the offseason and began training camp on the active/non-football injury list. However, he passed his physical last week and was activated by Denver. The 32-year-old couldn't secure a spot on the 53-man roster but will seek out opportunities elsewhere now that he's healthy.

Purcell is being held out of OTAs as he recovers from minor offseason knee surgery, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports. Purcell appeared in all 17 games for the Broncos last season, so it's unlikely his offseason procedure will cause him to miss much time, although it's not yet clear if he'll be available at the start of training camp. When healthy, Purcell should play a significant role in the team's defensive line rotation.

Purcell (illness) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday, Ben Swanson of the Broncos' official site reports, and he tested positive for the virus, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Purcell's potential absence against the Chargers on Sunday would be a blow to the Broncos' defensive line. If he is unable to clear protocols in time, DeShawn Williams would likely draw the start at nose tackle.

Purcell (thumb) has been ruled out of Sunday's game against Washington, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports. This was the expected result after Purcell was unable to practice at all during the week. DeShawn Williams and Shamar Stephen are the likely replacements at nose tackle.

Purcell (ankle) returned to practice Sunday, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports. Purcell suffered a sprained ankle July 29, but he was back in pads during Sunday's practice after he missed just over a week. Assuming he doesn't encounter any setbacks, it wouldn't be surprising to see the 30-year-old play in Saturday's preseason game against the Vikings.
