The Steelers released Averett (hamstring) on Tuesday, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports. Pittsburgh originally brought Averett on board back in May, but as the regular season approaches, it's decided to part ways with him. Averett will have to look for another opportunity elsewhere.

Averett left Saturday's preseason contest with a hamstring injury and will not return, Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. It remains to be seen if this injury will impact Averett's availability moving forward, but it will open up time for Kyler McMichael, Thomas Graham, Zyon Gilbert and Kiondre Thomas, all different corners competing for what figures to be one of the last spots available on the roster prior to the start of the regular season.

Averett is expected to sign a contract with the Steelers on Sunday, Chris Halicke of DKPittsburghSports.com reports. Averett was brought in for a tryout during the Steelers' rookie minicamp this past weekend. He last played for the Raiders in 2022, logging 13 tackles and one pass defended over seven appearances. The 29-year-old joined the 49ers last August, but he was released from IR with an injury settlement just two weeks later. Averett joined up with Detroit's practice squad Oct. 10 and never appeared in any games during the 2023 campaign. He'll return to the AFC North after spending the first four years of his career with Baltimore.

Averett (undisclosed) was released from the 49ers' injured reserve Thursday after both parties agreed to an injury settlement, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Averett was in danger of missing the entire 2023 campaign before this injury settlement was agreed upon. It is unclear what specific injury is nagging him, but he will now be able to sign elsewhere once he is back to full health. The 28-year-old recorded 13 tackles (12 solo) across seven games in Las Vegas last year.

Averett (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve Friday, Josh Dubow of the Associated Press reports. Averett is slated to miss the entire 2023 season unless he works out an injury settlement with the team. He finished the 2022 campaign on injured reserve due to a toe injury, but it's unclear if his absence in 2023 is related to that injury or a different one.
