• Colts' Jonathan Taylor: Held out of preseason finale

  Taylor was rested for the Colts' 25-16 loss to the Lions in Saturday's preseason finale. Prior to the game, head coach Shane Steichen said that he planned on having all of the team's offensive starters minus Taylor and quarterback Daniel Jones take the field for 8-to-12 snaps, per JJ Stankevicz of the Colts' official site. Taylor didn't play in the prior two preseason contests either, as the Colts didn't want to risk an injury to their lead back in advance of the regular season. After missing at least three games every season from 2022 through 2024, the 27-year-old played a full 17-game slate in 2025, playing north of 70 percent of the offensive snaps in all but one of those contests while accounting for 20 touchdowns, amassing 1,585 yards on the ground and setting career highs with 46 receptions and 378 receiving yards. He'll be primed for another hefty workload in 2026, and the Colts are hopeful that Jones' return from a torn ACL can help Taylor avoid the decline in efficiency that he experienced after the Colts' Week 11 bye last season (3.3 yards per carry in his final seven games).

  Taylor was among the Colts' key skill players who didn't see action in Thursday's preseason opener against the Patriots. Taylor, who agreed to terms on a two-year, $44 million contract extension on Aug. 6, is slated to continue to work in a high-volume role as the clear-cut top option in Indy's backfield, with DJ Giddens (hamstring) Seth McGowan in contention for slotting behind him. Taylor's next chance to see game action is Aug. 22 against the Falcons, but even if he does end up suiting up for either of the team's remaining exhibition games, his snap count would presumably be light.

  Taylor agreed to terms Thursday with the Colts on a two-year, $44 million contract extension, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Schefter relays that the deal is worth up to $47 million and includes $39 million guaranteed. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Taylor's new deal is the largest-ever third contract for an NFL running back, setting the stage for the 27-year-old to continue working as the undisputed lead option in a Colts backfield that also includes DJ Giddens, Seth McGowan, Ulysses Bentley, Anderson Castle and Roydell Williams. With both Taylor and Bijan Robinson now having landed extensions, attention turns to Detroit's Jahmyr Gibbs, another top-tier running back looking for a lucrative new pact ahead of Week 1.

  Taylor participated in Wednesday's practice, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis reports. Taylor, who is approaching the final season of his contract, indicated during the spring that he wants "to be a Colt for life," and per Stephen Holder of ESPN.com, the running back noted Wednesday that "there's been some good conversations" and that he has faith in the team coming through with a new deal for him. Following a 2025 regular season in which he recorded 323 carries for 1,585 yards and 18 touchdowns in 17 games while adding a 46/378/2 receiving line, the 2020 second-rounder retains his fantasy-friendly role as the undisputed lead option in an Indianapolis RB corps that also currently includes DJ Giddens, Seth McGowan, Ulysses Bentley and Anderson Castle.

  Taylor is entering the final season of his contract and said during the spring that he wants "to be a Colt for life," James Boyd of The Athletic reports. Taylor remains the clear centerpiece of Indianapolis' offense after handling 323 carries for 1,585 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2025. Though there is some uncertainty about Taylor's future with the Colts beyond 2026, the contract situation shouldn't interfere with his short-term fantasy profile, as the team has every reason to continue leaning on one of the league's few true workhorse backs while Daniel Jones (Achilles) works back to 100 percent form. Another high-volume season would keep Taylor firmly in the RB1 mix while strengthening his case for a new deal with Indianapolis, or a strong market as a free agent in 2027. Boyd also speculates that Taylor could hold in at training camp and work to negotiate an extension before the 2026 regular season.
