  The Chargers signed Lance to a one-year contract worth up to $6.75 million Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Lance is returning for a second campaign in Los Angeles following stints with San Francisco and Dallas. As Justin Herbert's backup last season, Lance saw action in four games (including a Week 18 start versus Denver), completing 27 of 57 pass attempts for 226 yards and a 0:1 TD:INT while adding 17 carries for 85 yards. The mobile quarterback should be the frontrunner to back up Herbert.

  Lance completed 20 of 44 pass attempts for 136 yards and an interception while gaining 69 yards and losing a fumble on nine carries in Sunday's 19-3 loss to Denver. QB Justin Herbert was a healthy scratch in Week 18 with the Chargers having little to play for regarding playoff seeding. This afforded Lance to make his first start of the season, and the results were mediocre as expected against one of the league's top defensive units. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft was able to put his athleticism on display by gaining 69 rushing yards. That's where the good feedback ends, as Lance completed less than half of his 44 pass attempts, with his only touchdown pass going to the other team via a pick-six in the one-sided loss. Lance will resume his backup role behind Herbert when the Chargers visit the Patriots next Sunday for the wild-card round of the playoffs.

• Chargers' Trey Lance: Getting Week 18 starting nod

  Coach Jim Harbaugh announced Monday that Lance will start next Sunday's regular-season finale against the Broncos, Kris Rhim of ESPN.com reports. Harbaugh said Justin Herbert and other important Chargers starters will rest Week 18. Herbert isn't even on track to suit up, per Rhim, so DJ Uiagalelei is expected to be elevated from the practice squad to serve as the QB2 behind Lance. Lance has appeared in three games this season, completing seven of 13 passes for 90 scoreless yards. Facing Denver's No. 1 defense with a skeleton crew around him, Lance will not be a recommended fantasy target.

  Justin Herbert (hand) plans to play in Week 14 against Philadelphia, but if he's out then Lance would start for the Chargers. He's worth adding in all Superflex and two-quarterback leagues for at least 5 percent of your remaining FAB. He would be tough to trust given the difficult matchup against the Eagles, especially behind a suspect offensive line, but Lance could still be useful in an emergency situation in deeper leagues.

• Chargers' Trey Lance: Starts final preseason game

  Lance completed five of eight passes for 38 yards in Saturday's 30-23 preseason loss to the 49ers. Lance drew the start with Justin Herbert resting, though he notably played ahead of Taylor Heinicke. Lance didn't lead a scoring drive, but he did have completions of 11 and 17 yards to Jalen Reagor to account for the majority of his production. It remains to be seen if Lance or Heinicke will serve as the No. 2 quarterback in Week 1 against Kansas City, though Lance has primarily played well with plenty of opportunity this preseason.
