McCoy (lower leg) has been ruled out for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Eagles, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.

McCoy remains without a clear timetable to return to action. The veteran signal-caller is still working to strengthen his right leg, which continues to cause him issues when attempting to plant. With McCoy sidelined, rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins will slot in as the top backup behind Case Keenum to begin the season.

Gabbert (shoulder) missed Wednesday's practice, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.

Gabbert initially wasn't expected to be ready for the season opener versus the 49ers, so his absence from practice early in the week is in line with that claim. Still, the team expects him to back up Jameis Winston for a better part of the season, but Ryan Griffin will take over that role until Gabbert's ready.

Goff and the Rams agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension Tuesday that brings his deal to six seasons for $134 million, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

The deal also includes an NFL-record $110 million guaranteed. Goff is fresh off a Super Bowl appearance with new head coach Sean McVay and a career-best year in which he threw for 4,688 yards and 32 touchdowns. With Goff heading into his fourth NFL season, big things will be expected of the 24-year-old, especially with the talent around him and new contract signed.

Fitzgerald (hamstring) signed with the Buccaneers' practice squad Sunday, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.

Tampa Bay originally signed Fitzgerald as an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State immediately after this year's draft. The 23-year-old was placed on the NFI list with a hamstring issue July 23 and missed all of the Buccaneers' training camp and preseason action.

Litton signed with Jacksonville's practice squad Monday, Hays Carlyon of 1010 AM WJXL reports.

Litton spent all of last season on the Chiefs' practice squad. The 23-year-old has yet to see any regular-season action after going undrafted out of Marshall in 2018.

Beathard survived the final roster cuts Saturday, but he will begin the year as third on the quarterback depth chart behind Jimmy Garoppolo and Nick Mullens, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

It was a bit surprising the 49ers actually kept three quarterbacks on the active roster, but it was not surprising that Mullens beat Beathard for the primary backup job based on their usage this preseason and their results last year. The 25-year-old should be one of seven inactives on game days this season, and it would take injuries to both quarterbacks ahead of him in order to even sniff fantasy relevance.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Mullens won the backup job behind Jimmy Garoppolo to open the regular season, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

The 49ers opted to keep three quarterbacks on its 53-man roster (C.J. Beathard is the other) but Mullens ended up officially winning the backup job. This announcement comes as no surprise, as the team's deployment of the backups -- combined with Mullens' superior performance last season -- signified that this was the plan all along. Garoppolo is ready to start Week 1 after tearing his ACL last year, but Mullens proved that he can put up some fantasy-worthy numbers should the starter suffer another injury.

Brissett signed a two-year extension worth $30 million with the Colts on Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

The extension shows that the team has confidence in Brissett, who's set to lead the Colts after Andrew Luck (calf) abruptly retired from the league. The 26-year-old already has a full season as the team's starter under his belt from when he filled in for Luck in 2017. That season, Brissett threw for 3,098 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions in addition to rushing 63 times for 260 yards and four scores.

Peterman was placed on injured reserve Monday with a small tear in the supporting ligament in his elbow, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Peterman had an impressive preseaon for the Raiders as he completed 71.4 percent of his passes for 475 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions while also rushing 12 times for 78 yards. The 25-year-old remained behind Derek Carr and Mike Glennon on the depth chart, but there was the potential for him to receive another look elsewhere if the Raiders waived him. Instead, Peterman will move to IR while he recovers from the ligament injury.

Browning signed with the Vikings' practice squad on Sunday, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Browning received the largest signing bonus ever for an undrafted free agent back in April, but he ended up being waived ahead of Saturday's roster deadline. The 23-year-old played in only two preseason games and completed 10 of 13 passes for 64 yards with one interception.
