Giants' Drew Lock: Start not guaranteed Thursday

Lock may not start in place of Tommy DeVito (forearm) in Thursday's game at Dallas, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

After Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reported earlier Wednesday that DeVito was a longshot to play Week 13, Lock became the favorite to draw the start for the Giants on Thursday. Rapoport relays that DeVito underwent an MRI on his right forearm Wednesday to determine if something may have been missed on his initial medical tests, but the quarterback is still scheduled to make the trip to Dallas. The team plans to have DeVito throw before Thursday's game to see if there's less discomfort than there has been the past few days, and if all goes well, he would get the start instead of Lock. Ultimately, a decision on the Giants' plans at quarterback will likely be announced when the team releases its inactive list 90 minutes before a 4:30 p.m. ET kickoff.

Giants' Tommy DeVito: May start after all Thursday

DeVito (forearm), who is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Cowboys, has a chance to start, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Rapoport's report runs counter to one from Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com earlier Wednesday that described DeVito as a longshot to be available Thursday. DeVito didn't join the Giants' traveling party to Dallas, as he remained behind and had an MRI on his right forearm to determine if the medical staff may have missed something. DeVito will travel to Dallas later Wednesday, and he'll be checked out again early Thursday to see if there's less discomfort in his forearm. If his pregame throwing session goes well, DeVito could be cleared to lead New York's offense. If that doesn't come to pass, though, DeVito would yield starting duties to Drew Lock.

  • Brock Purdy QB | SF

49ers' Brock Purdy: Limited, but barely throws Wednesday

Purdy (shoulder) was listed as a limited participant at Wednesday's practice, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Inman relays that Purdy attempted just two passes during the portion of practice that was open to the media, so the quarterback's limited listing may not have constituted much in the way of reps. More specifically, Purdy was seen throwing a short toss to Kyle Juszczyk during running back drills and another such throw to a member of the equipment staff, which was similar to last Wednesday, when he also went down as a limited participant on the official injury report. It's unclear how much on-field work San Francisco will log the rest of the week around the Thanksgiving holiday, but it's likely that Friday's practice will be key for Purdy's chances to miss just one game as a result of right shoulder soreness. The 49ers will travel to Buffalo for a Sunday night game this week.

  • Cooper Rush QB | BAL

Cowboys' Cooper Rush: Set to play Thursday

Rush (knee) doesn't have a designation for Thursday's game versus the Giants, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Rush was estimated as a limited participant on practice reports issued Monday and Tuesday, but his ability to handle a full session Wednesday has paved the way for him to continue to lead the Cowboys offense Week 13. While he won't have tight end Jake Ferguson (concussion) for a second consecutive contest Thursday, Rush will have top wideouts CeeDee Lamb (back/foot) and Brandin Cooks (knee) -- the latter of whom was activated from injured reserve Wednesday -- available to him.

  • Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence: Listed as limited, hopes to play

Lawrence (shoulder) was a limited practice participant Wednesday.

Demetrius Harvey of The Florida Times-Union reports that Lawrence hasn't ruled out eventually having surgery on his sprained non-throwing shoulder but hopes to play through the injury for now. Lawrence could be back in action as soon as Sunday against the Texans, after sitting out two straight games and then benefiting from a Week 12 bye to continue healing. While Lawrence's ability to practice in some fashion coming out of the bye week is a positive sign, he'll likely need to upgrade to full participation Thursday and/or Friday to avoid taking a designation into Sunday's contest.

  • Brock Purdy QB | SF

49ers' Brock Purdy: Will be limited Wednesday

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy (shoulder) will be a limited participant at Wednesday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.

Purdy emerged from Week 11 with a sore right shoulder, and he eventually was ruled out for this past Sunday's loss to Green Bay, seemingly out of an abundance of caution. Shanahan told Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com that Purdy resumed throwing Monday, and the quarterback now seems to be on a path to returning to action Sunday at Buffalo. How Purdy is listed on practice reports Thursday and Friday likely will be key for his odds to play this weekend.

  • Raiders' Aidan O'Connell: Named Week 13 starter

Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce said Wednesday that O'Connell (thumb) will start Friday's game at Kansas City, Levi Edwards of the Raiders' official site reports.

The Raiders listed O'Connell as a full practice participant Tuesday, one day after designating him from return from injured reserve. Las Vegas apparently plans to activate him from IR before Friday's game and put him back in the starting role. O'Connell took the job from Gardner Minshew (collarbone) going into Week 6, but then suffered a fractured thumb on his throwing hand in his second start in Week 7. Minshew has started each subsequent game, with Desmond Ridder subbing in a couple of times, including this past Sunday against Denver when Minshew suffered a season-ending injury.

  • Drew Lock QB | SEA

Giants' Drew Lock: Looks headed for Thanksgiving start

Lock is expected to serve as the Giants' starting quarterback in Thursday's game against the Cowboys with Tommy DeVito (forearm) listed as questionable but looking like a "longshot" to be available, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.

Following Sunday's 30-7 loss to the Buccaneers, head coach Brian Daboll said that DeVito would retain the starting job if healthy, but the second-year signal-caller has been battling soreness in his right forearm. DeVito was a limited participant in Tuesday's practice session before sitting out Wednesday's walk-through entirely, resulting in Lock taking extra reps with the first-team offense. While DeVito is still scheduled to travel to Dallas later Wednesday once he receives further evaluation, the Giants seem to be preparing for Lock to direct the offense on Thanksgiving Day. Lock has taken just 13 snaps over the course of three appearances this season as a backup behind the since-waived Daniel Jones and DeVito, but Lock has 23 career NFL starts under his belt and should make for a capable fill-in option for the Giants on a short week. However, with all 32 NFL teams set to play this week, Lock likely won't represent much more than a low-end fantasy play in leagues that start two quarterbacks or have a QB flex spot available.

  • Tommy DeVito QB | NE

Giants' Tommy DeVito: Looks unlikely to start Thursday

DeVito (forearm) is listed as questionable but is viewed as a "longshot" to be able to play Thursday against the Cowboys, a source tells Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com.

Coming out of his first start of the season in Sunday's 30-7 loss to the Buccaneers, DeVito wasn't included on the Giants' initial Week 13 injury report before he was listed as a limited participant in Tuesday's session due to right forearm soreness. DeVito ended up sitting out Wednesday's walk-through practice entirely and is scheduled to receive further evaluation before traveling to Dallas, but at this stage, the expectation is that the second-year signal-caller will be inactive as the emergency No. 3 quarterback on Thanksgiving Day. Drew Lock picked up extra reps with the first-team offense in practice this week and should be in line to start Thursday, with Tim Boyle serving as his top backup.

  • Tommy DeVito QB | NE

Giants' Tommy DeVito: Iffy for Thanksgiving Day game

DeVito (forearm) is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Cowboys, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.

DeVito is tending to soreness in his throwing arm after taking multiple hits in his first start of the season in this past Sunday's loss to the Buccaneers. Though he wasn't included on the Giants' initial Week 13 injury report issued Monday, DeVito was a limited participant in Tuesday's practice before sitting out Wednesday's walk-through session entirely. Though head coach Brian Daboll expressed optimism Tuesday that DeVito would be ready to make his second straight start this week, Drew Lock has taken extra reps with the first team in practice and will be ready to direct the offense if DeVito is unable to play. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network adds that DeVito won't join the Giants' traveling party Wednesday, as he's scheduled to receive further evaluation for his injury in New York before catching a flight to Dallas later in the day.
