• Hurricanes' Sam Gagner: Secures tryout

  Gagner will take part in training camp with Carolina on a professional tryout agreement, Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site reports Tuesday. Gagner saw action in just 28 regular-season games for the Oilers last year and was a healthy scratch throughout the postseason. If he does earn a full NHL contract coming out of camp, he figures to slot into a fourth-line role and could find himself periodically serving as a healthy scratch. As such, Gagner is unlikely to offer much in terms of fantasy value this season.

The Oilers are bolstering their forward depth ahead of their last two games of the regular season. The 34-year-old had 10 points across 27 top-level games earlier in the campaign. He'll likely fill a bottom-six role at some point during the team's last back-to-back of the regular season.

  Gagner was reassigned to AHL Bakersfield on Wednesday, per Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic. Although Gagner cleared waivers, he was initially kept on Edmonton's roster. However, after the Oilers acquired Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick from Anaheim on Wednesday, the decision was made to send Gagner to the minors. The 34-year-old has five goals and 10 points in 27 outings with the Oilers in 2023-24.

  Gagner is expected to remain in the NHL if he clears waivers Wednesday, Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic reports. Gagner being waived by Edmonton on Tuesday was a maneuver to give the team options ahead of the trade deadline. The Oilers hope to acquire a defenseman and should such a move come to fruition, they'll be able to temporarily assign Gagner to AHL Bakersfield to stay cap compliant. He has five goals and 10 points in 27 top-level contests this season.

  Gagner was placed on waivers Tuesday by Edmonton. Gagner played Sunday against Pittsburgh and recorded four shots -- prior to that he had been scratched for five straight games. Assuming he passes through waivers unclaimed, look for Gagner to head to Edmonton's AHL affiliate.
