  McIlrath suited up as a seventh defenseman in Monday's 4-1 loss to the Bruins. The Capitals rarely go with seven defenseman, and McIlrath saw just 1:45 of ice time in the contest. That experiment may be scrapped if Alex Ovechkin (lower leg) can play Saturday in Toronto. McIlrath hadn't played since Nov. 3, and he's stuck in the press box as an extra defenseman. He has two assists, 23 hits, 14 PIM and seven blocked shots over 11 appearances this season.

  McIlrath hasn't played since Nov. 3, sitting out 11 consecutive games after being scratched for Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Lightning. The Capitals' defense is fully healthy after early injuries for Matt Roy and Jakob Chychrun. McIlrath filled in admirably with two assists, four shots on net, 23 hits and 14 PIM over 10 appearances, but he's now stuck in a reserve role. He likely won't play unless a right-shot defenseman suffers an injury, and when he does check in, he offers more physicality than offense.

  McIlrath recorded two assists, two PIM, three hits and a plus-2 rating in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Flyers. This was McIlrath's first career multi-point effort, which came in his 80th NHL appearance. This is also just the second season in which he's had multiple points at the NHL level, as he's often been stuck as an organizational depth option in most organizations. The 32-year-old has added 12 hits, two blocked shots, two shots on net, nine PIM and a plus-1 rating over five outings this season. He'll likely continue to play until Matt Roy (lower body) is ready to return.

  McIlrath was returned to AHL Hershey on Monday. McIlrath suited up in all four games of Washington's first-round series defeat against the Rangers, posting four blocked shots, seven hits and 10 PIM. He will get to play for the Bears in the AHL playoffs after contributing nine points and 100 PIM in 58 minor-league appearances during the 2023-24 regular season.
