Ryan was released from his professional tryout with Detroit on Monday. Despite making it to the final days of training camp, Ryan wasn't able to secure a permanent contract with the Wings. With his release, the 34-year-old New Jersey native could be an option for other NHL clubs looking for veteran experience considering he's played in 866 games for Anaheim, Ottawa and Detroit.

Ryan remains in consideration for a spot on Detroit's Opening Night roster. Ryan has impressed head coach Jeff Blashill in the preseason, and the veteran seems to be holding up well after his 2020-21 campaign was cut short due to a triceps injury that required surgery in late April. Last season, Ryan pitched in seven goals and just as many assists through 33 games; he'll look to garner another contract from the Wings after they inked him to a one-year, $1 million contract in Oct. 2020.

Ryan (triceps) was on the ice for Detroit's first practice of training camp Thursday, The Athletic's Max Bultman reports. Ryan underwent surgery in late April to address his injured triceps, but he evidently was able to make a full recovery in time for the first practice of camp. The veteran winger is attending camp on a professional tryout offer, so he'll need to perform well in order to secure a contract with the Red Wings for the 2021-22 campaign. Ryan picked up seven goals and 14 points in 33 games with Detroit in 2020-21.

Ryan (triceps) signed a professional tryout agreement with Detroit on Tuesday. Considering Ryan spent the 2020-21 campaign with the Red Wings, the fact that the team isn't offering him a contract outright could be over concerns related to his injury. If the 34-year-old forward can show he is back to 100 percent, there is little reason to think Detroit won't bring him into the fold permanently ahead of Opening Night.

Ryan, a pending unrestricted free agent recovering from triceps surgery, hopes to return to the Red Wings next season, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports. Ryan is 34 years old but still looking forward to his 15th season in the NHL. The established offensive producer had seven goals and just as many assists working against a minus-14 rating through 33 games in his debut campaign with the Wings.
