  • Brent Burns D | COL

Avalanche's Brent Burns: Dealing with minor injury

Burns won't participate in either of Sunday's preseason games due to a minor undisclosed injury, per Aarif Deen of Colorado Hockey Now on Saturday.

Burns tweaked something, and there's no reason to have him play in an early preseason game if he's anything less than 100 percent. He had six goals and 29 points in 82 regular-season appearances with Carolina in 2024-25. Burns inked a one-year deal with the Avalanche over the summer. His role with the team might be limited at 40 years old, but Burns will probably receive some power-play ice time.

  • Rangers' Braden Schneider: Cleared for contact

Schneider (shoulder) didn't wear a non-contact jersey during Saturday's practice, Mollie Walker of the New York Post reports.

Schneider is not expected to play until later in the preseason but should be available for Opening Night against Pittsburgh on Oct. 7. He supplied six goals, 21 points, 95 shots on net, 145 blocked shots and 146 hits across 80 regular-season appearances in 2024-25.

  • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Practicing Saturday

Van Riemsdyk (personal) returned to practice Saturday, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News reports.

Van Riemsdyk skipped Friday's session due to a personal matter. He produced one goal, 20 assists, 80 shots on net and 151 blocked shots across 82 regular-season games in 2024-25.

  • Simon Benoit D | TOR

Maple Leafs' Simon Benoit: Unavailable for practice

Benoit (upper body) won't take part in Saturday's practice.

Benoit had been skating alongside Oliver Ekman-Larsson at the beginning of training camp. They were also a pairing for the Maple Leafs during the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Benoit had one goal, nine assists, 111 blocked shots and 204 hits in 78 regular-season games during the 2024-25 campaign.

  • Golden Knights' Jeremy Lauzon: Precautionary absence from practice

Lauzon (undisclosed) tweaked something and exited Friday's practice as a precaution, Danny Webster of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

Lauzon, who previously has been working through a lower-body injury, was cleared for camp Thursday, but he's already dealing with something new a couple of days in. The 28-year-old defenseman's ultra-physical playing style invites a significant amount of injury risk, but for now, there's no long-term concern. Look for Lauzon to occupy a third-pairing role in the regular season. His status should be updated prior to Sunday's preseason opener versus the Sharks.

  • Sharks' Lucas Carlsson: Recovering from surgery

Carlsson underwent surgery due to a lower-body injury during the offseason, but he's progressed to the point where he's day-to-day, Max Miller of NHL.com reports Friday.

Carlsson had 10 goals and 23 points in 45 regular-season appearances with AHL San Jose as well as a goal and four points in 13 outings with the Sharks in 2024-25. Provided he's healthy, the 28-year-old defenseman is expected to start the upcoming campaign in the minors.

  • Zeev Buium D | VAN

Wild's Zeev Buium: Dealing with upper-body injury

Buium sustained an upper-body injury Thursday and is considered day-to-day, Michael Russo of The Athletic reports.

Although it's discouraging that Buium is dealing with an injury early in camp, head coach John Hynes said Friday that he doesn't consider the injury to be serious. It's unclear whether Buium will miss any time during the preseason, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him be able to suit up for Opening Night.

  • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Won't practice Friday

Van Riemsdyk (personal) will sit out Friday's training camp session while awaiting the birth of his child, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News reports.

With a baby on the way, the Caps probably won't rush van Riemsdyk back into the lineup, which means he figures to be a doubt for Sunday's preseason clash with the Bruins. With the veteran blueliner sitting out, it could open up additional opportunities for youngsters like Vincent Iorio to see some extra minutes in preseason.

  • John Marino D | UTA

Mammoth's John Marino: Back in action for camp

Marino (upper body) skated with Group A in Thursday's on-ice practice session.

Marino missed five games at the end of the 2024-25 regular season due to the upper-body injury, but it is no longer an issue. The Mammoth divided their practice groups roughly along NHL/AHL lines, so Marino looks to be a full go heading into 2025-26. The 28-year-old blueliner should be in the mix for top-four minutes as a shutdown defenseman this season.

  • Sharks' Vincent Desharnais: Healthy for training camp

Desharnais (upper body) took part in Thursday's practice, per Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News, which suggests that he's healthy for the start of training camp.

Desharnais didn't play past March 27 due to the injury. He had three assists, 45 PIM, 87 hits and 83 blocks in 51 regular-season appearances between Vancouver, Pittsburgh and San Jose last year. Desharnais is in the mix for a spot on the Sharks' Opening Night roster.
