  • Lightning's Victor Hedman: Among league's top defenders

Hedman had a goal and two assists in an 8-0 win over Utah on Thursday.

Hedman now has 57 points, including 13 goals, in 69 games this season, and he sits in a three-way tie with Rasmus Dahlin and Evan Bouchard for fourth in NHL scoring from the blue line. Hedman won't get a Norris nomination this year given the domination of Cale Makar, Zach Werenski and Quinn Hughes, but that doesn't diminish his effectiveness for the Bolts.

  • Senators' Thomas Chabot: Gets sixth goal of season

Chabot scored a goal in a 4-3 win over Detroit on Thursday.

Chabot scored from the slot at 5:49 of the first period on the Sens' first shot of the game. It was his sixth goal of the season and first since Feb. 26 (13 games). Chabot has 34 points and 159 shots in 70 games this season. He's talented, but he has been overtaken by Jake Sanderson at this point in his career. Chabot may be a 35-40 point defender going forward.

  • Sharks' Marc-Edouard Vlasic: Not playing Thursday

Vlasic (upper body) will not suit up Thursday versus the Maple Leafs, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Vlasic is set to miss his third straight game. The Sharks won't rush the 37-year-old back since they have nothing to play for to close out the season. His absence allows Luca Cagnoni to stay in the lineup.

  • Sharks' Vincent Desharnais: Good to go Thursday

Desharnais (upper body) will play Thursday versus the Maple Leafs, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Desharnais will avoid missing time after sitting out Monday's practice session. The 28-year-old defenseman has not earned a point since Dec. 23 when he was a member of the Canucks, going scoreless over 28 contests since across three teams.

  • Oilers' Mattias Ekholm: Out Thursday

Ekholm (undisclosed) is expected to miss Thursday's clash against Seattle, per Paige Martin of Oilers TV.

Ekholm has nine goals, 33 points, 30 PIM, 42 hits and 95 blocks in 64 outings with the Oilers in 2024-25. Edmonton is expected to dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen, with Ty Emberson and John Klingberg (undisclosed) drawing into the lineup. Ekholm's absence was described as maintenance, which suggests the issue might be minor, so perhaps he'll be back Saturday versus Calgary.

  • Oilers' John Klingberg: Returning to action

Klingberg (undisclosed) will return to the lineup versus the Kraken on Thursday, Paige Martin of Oilers TV reports.

Klingberg didn't appear to be close to a return as of Wednesday, but he has made enough progress to end a 10-game absence. Mattias Ekholm (undisclosed) will be out of action Thursday, so Klingberg should slot back into a top-four role, though the Oilers will dress seven defensemen for the contest.

  • Erik Cernak D | TB

Lightning's Erik Cernak: Set to return

Cernak (undisclosed) is expected to play Thursday versus Utah.

Cernak left Tuesday's 6-1 win over Pittsburgh due to the injury, but it seems he won't miss a full game. He has three goals, 20 points, 35 PIM and 148 hits across 65 outings in 2024-25.

  • Erik Johnson D | COL

Avalanche's Erik Johnson: Sitting out Thursday

Johnson (lower body) won't play against the Kings on Thursday, Evan Rawal of the Denver Gazette reports.

Johnson participated in the morning skate but remains day-to-day, and he will miss his second straight game. It's unclear if he will be ready to return to action versus St. Louis on Saturday. Due to Johnson's absence, Keaton Middleton will probably remain in the lineup against Los Angeles.

  • Islanders' Scott Mayfield: Struggling for playing time

Mayfield has played in just eight of 16 games since he returned from a lower-body injury Feb. 23.

Mayfield has no points in that span, adding eight blocked shots, seven hits, five shots on net and a minus-1 rating. The Islanders have nine healthy defensemen on the roster, five of them being right-handed shots, including Mayfield. He can play on either side, but it's clear that he is not viewed as one of the team's six best blueliners at this time, and he doesn't have the same scoring appeal as Adam Boqvist to draw in as a seventh defenseman on occasion. Mayfield is at seven points, 45 shots on net, 78 hits, 95 blocked shots and a plus-13 rating over 58 outings this season.

  • Islanders' Tony DeAngelo: Scores in loss Wednesday

DeAngelo scored a goal on four shots and blocked two shots in Wednesday's 5-2 loss to the Canucks.

DeAngelo extended his point streak to four games (one goal, four assists). The 29-year-old's tally briefly gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead in the second period. He's been a good fit in a top-four role since joining the team in January, racking up three goals, 15 points, 48 shots on net, 32 blocked shots and a minus-2 rating over 24 appearances.
