Top Zack Gelof News

  • Athletics' Zack Gelof: Slightly behind schedule

Gelof (shoulder) will be held out of action for the beginning of the Athletics' Cactus League schedule, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Gelof is still building up his hitting progression after he had surgery last September to repair a dislocated left shoulder. Barring setbacks, it doesn't seem he is in danger of being unavailable for Opening Day, though the 26-year-old isn't a lock to make the roster. Gelof has been working out in the outfield this spring and could transition to a utility role.

  • Athletics' Zack Gelof: Could see time in center field

Gelof could get looks in center field in addition to reps at second base, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Gelof was spotted trotting out to center field during batting practice Monday, and skipper Mark Kotsay elaborated further on Gelof's potential utility role in spring training and heading into the 2026 season. "I do think Zack can play the outfield," said Kotsay. "We've seen Zack be a plus defender. There could be a role that exists on this club where Zack is on the roster." Gallegos notes that Jeff McNeil is in line to see everyday opportunities at second base, which will make the path for playing time more difficult for Gelof, who struggled in 2024 and couldn't stay healthy in 2025. However, the 26-year-old has always been a strong defender with plus speed, which will undoubtedly help as he learns the outfield. "With how the last two years have gone, I definitely want to lean into my athleticism," said Gelof. "Be the best baserunner on the team. Defensively, bring that aspect. I know I can hit, but the bare minimum is being a winning player. That's what I bring. I need to bring that to this team, so that's what I'm going to do."

  • Athletics' Zack Gelof: Feels healthy for spring

Gelof (shoulder) said Wednesday that he's "feeling healthy, feeling ready to go" and expects to be a full participant when he reports to spring training later this week, Jason Burke of SI.com reports.

After posting 14 home runs and 14 steals in just 69 games as a rookie in 2023, Gelof looked to be a central figure in the Athletics' rebuilding effort, but injuries and an ability to make consistent contact against big-league pitching have left his future murky. He didn't make his 2025 big-league debut until early July while recovering from a fractured bone in his right wrist and a stress reaction in his ribs, then slashed just .174/.230/.272 with a 45.5 percent strikeout rate over 101 plate appearances between two stints with the Athletics before he was shut down in late September due to a dislocated left shoulder. He appears to be healthy again following surgery on the shoulder, but Gelof may need a strong showing at the plate during Cactus League play to make a compelling case for a spot on the Athletics' Opening Day roster.

  • Athletics' Zack Gelof: Undergoes surgery on shoulder

Gelof successfully underwent surgery on his left shoulder Wednesday, Jason Burke of SI.com reports.

Gelof dislocated his left shoulder while diving for a grounder in the fifth inning of Friday's game against the Pirates. Now that he's undergone surgery, Gelof will turn his attention towards being ready for the start of spring training. He appeared in 30 games for the Athletics this season and finished with a .174/.230/.272 slash line with one steal, 12 runs, two homers and seven RBI in 101 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Zack Gelof: Officially placed on IL

Gelof was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a dislocated left shoulder.

It was already reported that Gelof was done for the season after suffering the injury in Friday's game against the Pirates. Max Muncy (hand) was activated from the injured list in a corresponding move and should play regularly in place of Gelof down the stretch.

  • Athletics' Zack Gelof: Out for season

Gelof dislocated his left shoulder during Friday's game against Pittsburgh, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Gelof suffered the injury while diving for a grounder in the fifth inning of Friday's contest, and he will ultimately have to miss the rest of the season. He'll close the book on 2025 with a forgettable .174/.230/.272 slash line to go with two homers, seven RBI, 12 runs scored and a steal through 101 plate appearances in the majors.

  • Athletics' Zack Gelof: Exits early Friday

Gelof was removed from Friday's game against the Pirates with a left shoulder injury, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Gelof appeared to be holding his wrist after making a diving play on a groundball in the fifth inning, but the issue has now been revealed to be in his shoulder. He was immediately replaced at second base following the incident and will presumably head in for imaging to determine the severity of his injury. Fantasy managers can consider him day-to-day until the team provides more details about the second baseman's status.

  • Athletics' Zack Gelof: Sitting in third straight game

Gelof is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox.

The right-handed-hitting Gelof finds himself on the bench for the third game in a row, this time sitting against a right-hander (Lucas Giolito) after his prior two absences from the lineup came versus lefty starters. The Athletics had been deploying Gelof as their everyday second baseman following his call-up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Aug. 25, but he's slashed a disappointing .230/.277/.377 with a 43.9 percent strikeout rate since that time. He appears to have moved into a reserve role while the Athletics have turned to Darell Hernaiz at second base and Brett Harris at third.

  • Athletics' Zack Gelof: Absent from lineup

Gelof is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game in Boston.

It's the second straight game that Gelof has been absent from the lineup after he had started 17 straight contests. Darell Hernaiz will cover second base for the Athletics.

  • Athletics' Zack Gelof: Sitting Sunday

Gelof is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds.

Darell Hernaiz will slide over from his usual post at third base to cover the keystone in place of Gelof, who had started in every game since being called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on Aug. 25. In the three weeks following his promotion, Gelof is hitting .230 with two home runs, one steal, eight runs and six RBI while striking out at a 43.9 percent clip over 17 games.
