Lazaro Armenteros: Released by Oakland
The Athletics released Armenteros on Monday.
Armenteros signed with Oakland for $3 million as a 17-year-old international free agent back in 2016. The Athletics added him to their 40-man roster over the offseason before booting him off of it in May, and he passed through waivers unclaimed. Armenteros is still just 25 years old but has struck out at a 37.2 percent clip in pro ball and was slashing .219/.352/.329 in 176 plate appearances between Double-A Midland and Triple-A Las Vegas in 2024.

Athletics' Lazaro Armenteros: Outrighted to Triple-A
Armenteros cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas by the Athletics on Thursday, Francys Romero of MLB.com reports.
Armenteros was removed from the A's 40-man roster earlier this week, but all other teams passed on adding him via waivers, so he will remain in the Oakland organization. The 24-year-old has slashed only .133/.278/.250 with a 51.4 percent strikeout rate this season with Las Vegas.

Athletics' Lazaro Armenteros: Jettisoned from 40-man roster
The Athletics designated Armenteros for assignment Tuesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Armenteros was a lauded signee out of Cuba back in 2016 but has struggled to hit with any consistency since entering the Athletics organization. In his first taste of Triple-A Las Vegas this season, the 24-year-old has slashed only .133/.278/.250 with a 51.4 percent strikeout rate. Armenteros' removal from the 40-man roster clears space for Tyler Ferguson.

Athletics' Lazaro Armenteros: Optioned to Triple-A
Armenteros was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday.
Armenteros didn't get much run in Cactus League play this spring, going 1-for-11 with a two-run homer, two runs scored and two walks while striking out four times over nine contests. He'll look to get more reps at Triple-A and attempt to earn another opportunity with Oakland this season.

Athletics' Lazaro Armenteros: Added to 40-man roster
Oakland selected Armenteros' contract from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Armenteros is now part of the Athletics' 40-man roster and will be protected from next month's Rule 5 Draft. The 24-year-old outfielder put up an encouraging .879 OPS with 20 homers and 17 steals in 110 games this past season between High-A Lansing and Double-A Midland.

Athletics' Lazaro Armenteros: Flashing power stroke in Stockton
Armenteros, RotoWire's No. 6 prospect in the Athletics organization, is slashing .224/.360/.449 with 16 extra-base hits (nine doubles, one triple, nine home runs), 19 RBI, 31 walks, five stolen bases and 30 runs across 189 plate appearances with High-A Stockton.
After a slow start with Low-A Beloit last season, Armenteros bounced back to finish with a solid .277/.374/.401 line across 79 games. The 20-year-old's impressive skill set is likely to enable him to do the same by season's end in Stockton, where he's already set a new career high in homers and is just two extra-base hits short of the career-best 18 he laced during 2018 over 35 additional games. His current 38.6 percent strikeout rate is a reminder of the one major hole in his game that will require significant improvement before he arrives at the big-league level.

Athletics' Lazaro Armenteros: Holding his own at Low-A level
Armenteros is slashing .280/.362/.460 with five extra-base hits (three doubles, two home runs) and nine RBI across 58 plate appearances for Low-A Beloit.
The 19-year-old experienced similar success with the Athletics' rookie-ball squad in 2017, and it appears he's handling the slight bump up in level of competition well overall. Armenteros has the potential to provide an appealing speed/power mix, but consistent contact continues to be one of his primary challenges in the nascent stages of his professional career. After striking out at a 26.5-percent clip in the AZL last season, Armenteros has whiffed in 31.0 percent of his plate appearances thus far in 2018. However, his walk rate has also seen a nice bump (8.8 percent to 12.1 percent), an encouraging sign amidst his aforementioned strikeout struggles.

Athletics' Lazaro Armenteros: Heads to Beloit for full-season debut
Armenteros will make his full-season debut with Low-A Beloit on Monday.
"Lazarito" opened the season at extended spring training, but the Athletics finally felt comfortable enough sending him up to a full-season affiliate. The 18-year-old Armenteros batted .288 with four homers and 10 stolen bases in the AZL last year. He's hitting second in his inaugural appearance for the Snappers.

Athletics' Lazaro Armenteros: Opens in extended spring training
Armenteros is opening the season in extended spring training, MLB.com's Mike Rosenbaum reports.
The Athletics are typically pretty aggressive with their prospects, so it's telling that they don't think Armenteros is quite ready for Low-A. He hit .288/.376/.474 with four home runs and 10 steals in 156 at-bats in the AZL last year. Lazarito will likely head to the New York-Penn League when short-season play opens this summer.
