Mariners' Emerson Hancock: Transferred to 15-day IL

Seattle placed Hancock (groin) on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a left adductor strain, retroactive to Aug. 29.
Hancock felt something off in his left leg early on in his most recent start Friday against Toronto. The 27-year-old went on to take the loss after allowing five runs over five innings. The right-hander will miss a minimum of 15 days and a couple of starts for Seattle. The Mariners recalled Nick Davila from Triple-A Tacoma to fill in for Hancock on the 26-man roster.

Hancock felt something in his left leg as he went to make a tag in the first inning of Friday's game, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. The right-hander gutted it out and completed five innings in a loss, at least saving the bullpen some extra stress. "If you feel like you can go out there and compete and throw the ball, then that's what I wanted to do," Hancock added after the game. While Saturday's update is encouraging, the Mariners will give it another day or two before determining Hancock's availability for his next start.

Hancock (7-8) took the loss against Toronto on Friday, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out one batter over five innings. He did not issue a walk.
Hancock put the Mariners in an early hole after giving up three runs in the first inning. He appeared to settle in thereafter, getting through the next three frames unscathed before giving up solo home runs to George Springer and Nathan Lukes in the fifth. Hancock has allowed two homers in back-to-back games, and the five earned runs Friday are his most in a start since June 20 against the Red Sox. He'll take a 3.57 ERA and 1.14 WHIP over 138.2 innings into his next start, which is lined up for next week against Boston at Fenway Park.

Hancock allowed three runs on eight hits and a hit batsman while striking out six and walking none over 5.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Cubs on Friday.
Hancock started poorly, giving up a solo home run to Pete Crow-Armstrong and a two-run shot to Alex Bregman in the first inning. After that, Hancock was able to settle down, finishing with 98 pitches (68 strikes), though the Mariners' bullpen would blow the lead he left them with. Over four starts in August, Hancock has allowed 11 runs (10 earned) across 23.1 innings, adding a 23:5 K:BB in that span. For the season, he's at a 3.37 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 125:32 K:BB through 133.2 innings over 24 starts. He's just an inning shy of matching his overall workload from the 2025 regular season, and he's 15.1 innings away from his career high from 2024. Hancock is projected to make his next start in Toronto.

It looked like a rough day was brewing, as Houston tagged Hancock for a pair of runs in the first and second innings, but the hurler was dialed in from that point on. The right-hander is continuing to enjoy a breakout campaign, giving up three runs or fewer in eight consecutive starts now. Hancock will bring an excellent 3.30 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 119:32 K:BB over 128 innings into his next scheduled appearance against the Cubs in pitcher-friendly Seattle.

Hancock put too much traffic on the basepaths early. He wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and stranded runners in the second and third frames before the Rays were able to scrape runs together in the next two innings. This was Hancock's third straight loss, and he's allowed nine runs (eight earned) on 25 hits and four walks over 15.2 innings in that span. Overall, he has a 3.35 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 111:30 K:BB through 121 innings over 22 starts. Hancock's next start is projected to be on the road in Houston.

Hancock ultimately wasn't traded away by the Mariners, ending speculation about his future with the team for now. The right-hander pitched at an acceptable level Tuesday, but he didn't get any run support, giving him his second loss in a row while extending his winless stretch to four outings. Hancock is now at a 3.33 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 108:29 K:BB through 116.1 innings over 21 starts. Luis Castillo is now with the White Sox, so Hancock and the rest of the Mariners' starters can settle into a more traditional rhythm as part of a five-man rotation. Hancock's next turn is projected to be at home versus the Rays over the weekend.

Hancock was struck in the hand by a comebacker in his last start before the All-Star break, forcing him out of the game after 1.2 innings. However, X-rays came back negative, and Hancock was able to turn in a quality start Wednesday after an extended midseason break. To close out the season's first half, Hancock had allowed just one run on seven hits across 14.1 innings in his last three outings. His ERA now sits at 3.16 through 19 starts (105.1 innings) this season with a 1.01 WHIP and 97:26 K:BB. Hancock is tentatively in line to face the Dodgers at home his next time out.

The right-hander remained in the game after being struck in the hand by a comebacker during the opening frame, but he was lifted after issuing a two-out walk in the second inning. The specifics of the injury aren't yet clear, but for now the 27-year-old should be considered day-to-day.
