Young's bat has faded late in the season -- he's just 3-for-22 over his last seven games. The steal was his fourth on nine attempts this campaign as he's struggled to make an impact on the basepaths. The infielder is batting .246 with a .693 OPS, 17 home runs, 65 RBI, 71 runs scored, 19 doubles and four triples across 155 contests.

Young had started each of the Mariners' last nine games, but after producing a poor .188/.333/.250 slash line during that stretch, he'll hit the bench Sunday. The Mariners called up one of their top prospects in Michael Arroyo from Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday, and he'll immediately enter the lineup in place of Young, starting at second base against left-hander Gage Jump. The right-handed-hitting Arroyo could end up settling into a platoon at the keystone with Young, who is batting .218/.278/.294 (69 wRC+) over 187 plate appearances versus lefties.

Young extended Seattle's lead to 8-2 in the fifth inning with his 16th homer of the year, a 356-foot shot off Zack Wheeler. It's an encouraging sign for Young, who had been struggling mightily at the plate coming into Monday's contest -- he'd gone just 1-for-25 while striking out at a 31 percent rate in his previous seven games. Overall, the 23-year-old Young is slashing .251/.310/.393 through 530 plate appearances this season with 62 runs scored, 57 RBI and three steals.

This was Young's second consecutive multi-hit effort, both of which have included a homer. The second baseman has 13 long balls on the year, including four over his last nine contests. Young batted third Sunday against southpaw Robbie Ray, and the 22-year-old infielder could stick higher in the order if he sustains his momentum.

Mariners' Cole Young: Turns tide with huge homer
Young went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in a 4-3, extra-inning win over the Giants on Saturday.
Logan Webb dominated Seattle for six scoreless innings, giving up only one hit (a single by Young). However, the Giants' ace gifted the Mariners an opportunity when he walked a batter and hit another in the seventh frame, and Young made him pay with a game-tying, two-out, three-run blast to right-center field. It was the second baseman's 12th long ball of the season and pushed him into the Seattle lead with 46 runs batted in. The RBI total also ranks fifth among MLB second basemen.
