  • Rays' Chris Roycroft: Joins big club

The Rays recalled Roycroft from Triple-A Durham on Monday.

Tampa Bay optioned right-hander Mason Englert to Triple-A to open up a spot on the active roster for Roycroft, who will join the big club for the first time since being acquired via trade with St. Louis on June 23. Roycroft owns a 5.02 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 23:8 K:BB in 28.2 innings at the Triple-A level this season and will likely be limited to a low-leverage relief role while he's up with the Rays.

  • Rays' Chris Roycroft: Traded to Rays

The Rays acquired Roycroft from the Cardinals on Tuesday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Roycroft has posted a 6.41 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 52:37 K:BB over 60.1 innings at the major-league level and had been designated for assignment last week. The 6-foot-8 righty's sinker rates well in terms of Stuff+, and it would not be a surprise if the Rays are able to coax more out of him. Roycroft will report to Triple-A Durham for now.

  • Cardinals' Chris Roycroft: Works on regaining arm angle

Roycroft worked this offseason at Premier Pitching Performance in the St. Louis area to return his arm angle to what it was in 2024, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Roycroft's arm angle dropped four degrees in 2025, per Baseball Savant, which the reliever believes was the main cause of his struggles (7.84 ERA in 20 appearances). The 6-foot-8 righty's arm angle was higher during a scoreless appearance Sunday versus the Astros in Grapefruit League play. Roycroft is competing for a middle relief role in the St. Louis bullpen.

  • Cardinals' Chris Roycroft: Competing for bullpen spot

Roycroft is one of four competitors eyeing one of the final two spots in the Cardinals' Opening Day bullpen, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Nick Anderson, Kyle Leahy and Riley O'Brien are the others in the mix. Roycroft has put his best foot forward to claim one of the jobs, tossing six scoreless frames with a 5:1 K:BB during Grapefruit League play. The 6-foot-8 right-hander excelled at limiting hard contact last season with a 33.7 percent hard-hit rate and two percent barrel rate, but he'll need to find a weapon against left-handed batters after they had a .955 OPS against him in 2024. If Roycroft makes the Opening Day roster, it's likely to be as a middle reliever initially.
