What looked destined to be a one-sided Los Angeles Rams victory took a 180-degree turn and developed into a thriller that ultimately went the other way. The Denver Broncos rallied in the second half of the Week 3 edition of "Sunday Night Football" to erase a two-score deficit and notch a 30-26 triumph over the NFC West behemoths, improving to 2-1 in the process and dropping the so-called super team to 1-2.
The Rams dominated the first half and showed no ill effects of being without the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and a superstar wide receiver. The absences of Myles Garrett and Puka Nacua were a relative afterthought while Los Angeles constructed a 16-0 lead. They out-gained the Broncos 256 to 72 before the break, and they were in total control.
But then the Broncos flipped the game on its head. On the other side of the halftime break, Bo Nix connected with Pat Bryant II and Nate Adkins for back-to-back touchdowns and converted the two-point conversion on both of them to level the score before the third quarter had even expired. Denver's defense also stepped up, as it held the Rams to a meager 19 yards in the frame.
And things were just getting started. No sequence exemplified the back-and-forth nature of this game quite like the one that unfolded in the fourth quarter.
First, Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga intercepted Matthew Stafford and returned the ball 67 yards for a pick-six to give Denver its first lead of the game. Not at all rattled, however, Stafford responded on the ensuing possession with a massive 48-yard touchdown strike to Konata Mumpfield, who finished the night with 4 catches for 93 yards and a score while filling in for Nacua.
The Broncos came right back, though, with a touchdown drive of their own, ending with Nix leaping over the line and into the end zone for the game-winning score with 47 seconds. That sneak capped an eventful drive that featured a shaky pass interference call (more on that in a second), another penalty near the goal line and an overturned touchdown run that was ruled just short of the end zone prior to Nix's leap over the top.
But a game so topsy-turvy and entertaining deserved to end with last-second drama, and it did just that after the Rams quickly marched into the red zone despite having only 47 seconds and one timeout remaining once they got the ball following Nix's touchdown. They had one final look at the end zone on the last play from 19 yards out, but as time expired, Hufanga hauled in his second interception of the night to finalize Denver's come-from-behind win.
CBS Sports was with you throughout the Broncos' victory. Below are our takeaways plus highlights and in-game analysis.
We have to start here, because if not for a pass interference call that was highly questionable, the game-winning touchdown by Bo Nix never would have happened. The Broncos had third-and-6 from the Rams' 11-yard line. Nix was quickly pressured in the backfield and lofted a pass that looked at first like a throwaway but was actually intended for Pat Bryant, and it was intercepted by Josh Wallace.
However, Wallace was called for pass interference on the play. The replay, though, showed a pretty good acting job by Bryant, who seemingly pulled Wallace into his own body and flailed, drawing the interference call and negating what would have been a game-ending pick. NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay said on the broadcast that the play should not have been flagged for interference.
Alas, McAulay does not make the calls on the field. Bill Vinovich's crew did. And they called interference on Wallace, setting up first-and-goal. A few plays later, Nix leaped over the line for a touchdown on a quarterback sneak to give the Broncos the lead for good.
The Broncos came back from deficits of 16-0, 19-16 and 26-23 to secure the win. According to the CBS Sports research department, they now lead the NFL in comeback wins (13) and second-half comeback wins (10) since the start of last season.
This is their second-largest comeback win in that span behind a 19-0 fourth-quarter comeback against the Giants last season. They have come back from a second-half deficit in each of their two wins this season, having also done so last week against the Jaguars.
Meanwhile, according to ESPN, this was Nix's 11th fourth-quarter comeback including the playoffs, the third-most by any quarterback in his first three seasons since 1950. Only John Elway (12) and Derek Carr (12) had more. And of course, Nix still has 14 games to go in his third season to tie or break the record.
Talanoa Hufanga was the hero for the Broncos, with two interceptions. His first pick of the evening actually gave the Broncos their first lead of the night, as it was a pick six of Matthew Stafford that he took 67 yards to the house.
And his second interception came on the final play of the game, as he stepped in front of a pass intended for Davante Adams in the end zone and sealed the comeback win for Denver. He also did a great job to hang onto the ball as he got clocked by Kyren Williams after the pick.
Hufanga also had five tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss and three passes defended. He was huge all game long.
The Rams lost tight end Terrance Ferguson to an ankle injury and cornerback Jaylen Watson to a shoulder injury in the first half.
The Ferguson injury didn't affect them too much as they had five tight ends active for the game and Tyler Higbee had a nice night with eight catches for 62 yards and a touchdown, but Watson's absence forced Emmanuel Forbes and Wallace to play more snaps than usual, and they were victimized multiple times.
Bryant's touchdown came when Forbes and Wallace ran into each other on a crossing route, for example, while Jaylen Waddle's two-point conversion came on a throw over Wallace's head. And again, Wallace was flagged for the controversial pass interference on the Broncos' game-winning drive.
Talanoa Huganga ends the game with his second interception of the night. The Rams had one final chance with two seconds left from the 19-yard line, but Matthew Stafford's pass couldn't quite get to Davante Adams and was intercepted with no time remaining.
After a long goal-to-go sequence that included multiple penalties and a review of a touchdown that was subsequently ruled short at the 1-inch line, Nix jumped over the top of the line and reached the ball out across the plane for a touchdown to give Denver the lead back with 47 seconds remaining. The Rams do have one timeout left, but they need a touchdown to win.
Bo Nix was seemingly trying to throw the ball away while being hounded in the backfield, and Josh Wallace interfered with Pat Bryant while making an interception on the play. It gives the Broncos a first-and-goal at the 7-yard line with 1:09 remaining. This looked like a bad call. Bryant seemingly pulled Wallace toward his own body.
Well, that was quick. After a sack on first down, Stafford completed three consecutive passes to Mumpfield, with the third of them burning Riley Moss on a double move for a 48-yard touchdown that put the Rams back in the lead after the pick-six. The four-play drive took all of 1 minute and 11 seconds.
Talanoa Hufanga stepped in front of a Matthew Stafford pass intended for Kyren Williams on third down and he took it 67 yards to the house to give the Broncos their first lead of the night. Stafford was apparently either fooled by the coverage or just didn't see Hufanga, and he threw the 33rd pick-six of his career. That's the most for any quarterback in NFL history.
The Broncos punted from the 39-yard line on fourth-and-1. Typically you would want a team to go for it in that situation in the fourth quarter of a close game, but they got a great kick and pinned the Rams down at the 6-yard line. That's a decision to remember if the Rams go on a long drive or make this a two-score game with their next possession.
The Rams were unable to turn the interception into a touchdown, instead settling for Harrison Mevis' fourth field goal of the night. This one came from 48 yards out after a sack by Talanoa Hufanga on third-and-5 set the Rams back.
The Broncos got into Rams territory with a really nice pass from Nix to Courtland Sutton over the top of a pass interference penalty, but two plays later Nix got hit as he was throwing and the ball floated into the arms of Josh Wallace for an interception. Now, it's the Rams who have a chance to re-take the lead.
After taking a 16-0 lead into halftime, the Rams have -4 yards of total offense after halftime. They have punted on all three drives to allow the Broncos back into the game, and now Denver has a chance to take the lead for the first time.
Denver made the Rams re-punt the ball after a penalty on Emmanuel Forbes and gained about 30 yards of field position out of it, then quickly drove down the field for another touchdown — this one on a checkdown to Nate Adkins, who was wide open and walked into the end zone. The two-point conversion was good on a pass from Nix to Pat Bryant, who snatched it out of the air over the top of a defensive back. All tied up.
The Broncos have now forced back-to-back punts deep in Rams territory, this one coming courtesy of a penalty and then a missed connection on a deep ball between Matthew Stafford and Davante Adams. Denver will get the ball with a chance to drive and tie this game up.
Bryant wound up wide open in the back of the end zone on a crossing route after Emmanuel Forbes ran into his own man trying to chase Bryant across the formation. The Broncos got the two-point conversion on a bullet from Bo Nix to Jaylen Waddle over the back of backup DB Josh Wallace. It's back to a one-possession game.
Harvey got tackled hard by Quentin Lake on the last play-action pass. He stayed down for a second, got up, then went back down. The Broncos are already thin at running back with rookie Jonah Coleman on injured reserve. They have JK Dobbins and Tyler Badie outside of Harvey. Harvey is headed to the medical tent.
The Broncos start the second half with a quick three-and-out and the home fans are not happy. Denver has 73 total yards on 23 plays so far tonight, and just 11:03 of possession so far.
L.A. marched 54 yards in just over a minute to set up Harrison Mevis' third field goal of the second quarter. This one comes from 40 yards out as time expires in the first half and gives the Rams a two-touchdown (and two-two-point-conversion) lead.
The Broncos' best drive of the game just got shut down by Omar Speights. He ran through Tyler Badie and sacked Bo Nix on third-and-2 to force a punt near midfield.
The Rams cornerback was carted off the field after visiting the medical tent with an apparent shoulder injury.
Harrison Mevis adds another short field goal to extend L.A.'s lead. The Rams had a first down deep in the red zone but it was called back for offensive pass interference on Davante Adams, and that led to the drive stalling out and settling for the kick.
Harrison Mevis adds a 36-yard field goal after a nice drive from the Rams to get into field goal range was stalled by a penalty on Steve Avila and then Konata Mumpfield dropped a screen pass on third down. Rams lead is now two scores.
The Broncos drove into scoring range before failing on third down. Lutz doinked the ensuing kick off the left upright and missed, so it remains 7-0 Rams toward the end of the first quarter.
The Rams tight end is QUESTIONABLE to return with an ankle injury. L.A. has five tight ends active, so it should be relatively okay at the position without him, but he's the most explosive player of the bunch and they kind of need that without Puka Nacua.
L.A. walked the ball down near the goal line and capped an 11-play, 63-yard drive with a touchdown pass from Stafford to Higbee in the flat off a play-action pass. Higbee blocked down and then leaked to the outside and beat Riley Moss' tackle attempt near the goal line for the score.
After a three-and-out from the Broncos, the Rams got the ball back with some good field position. They just went for it on fourth-and-3 near midfield and converted with a quick pass to Kyren Williams. They tried to hustle up to the line to snap the ball for the next play but Sean Payton threw the flag to challenge the ruling, which was then upheld.
Denver led the NFL with 68 sacks last year — 11 more than any other team. The Broncos just ended the Rams' first drive of the night with a sack of Matthew Stafford. Stafford didn't see a wide-open Terrance Ferguson on the previous play for what would have been a game-opening touchdown pass.
The Rams are once again without Puka Nacua tonight. Last week on "Monday Night Football," Adams went berserk in Nacua's absence: 8 catches for 195 yards and 2 touchdowns against the Giants. Can he do it again? He's likely going to see a lot of Patrick Surtain II tonight, so it'll be much more difficult to do so.
