Vikings' Carson Wentz: Returning to backup role
Wentz will serve as the Vikings' backup quarterback Sunday against the Buccaneers after head coach Kevin O'Connell announced Monday that Kyler Murray has cleared concussion protocol and will start Week 3.
Wentz performed admirably across nearly two full games in relief of Murray, who sustained the concussion midway through the first quarter of the season opener against the Packers. After completing 12 of 19 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns in the Vikings' come-from-behind 39-22 win over Green Bay, Wentz started Week 2 against the Bears and played turnover-free football in rainy and windy conditions en route to leading Minnesota to a 9-3 win. While Murray will reclaim the starting job now that he's out of the protocol, Wentz's performance over the past two weeks firmly solidifies him ahead of 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy on the depth chart.

Vikings' Carson Wentz: Can't overcome weather in Chicago
Wentz completed 11 of 20 passes for 143 yards in Sunday's 9-3 win over the Bears. He added six yards on three carries.
Neither team reached 200 passing yards on a wet and windy day at Soldier Field, so Wentz had no real opportunity to build on his impressive performance last week in relief of Kyler Murray (concussion), when he threw three TDs. Murray could clear the concussion protocol in time to re-take the reins of the offense in Week 3, returning Wentz to the bench for a road trip to Tampa Bay after he led the Vikings to a 2-0 start to the season.

Vikings' Carson Wentz: Will start Sunday at Chicago
Coach Kevin O'Connell said Friday that Wentz will be the Vikings' starting quarterback Sunday at Chicago with Kyler Murray (concussion) ruled out for that contest.
Wentz stepped in for Murray 12 plays into this past Sunday's game against the Packers and helped guide the Vikings to a 39-22 win, but the former completed 12 of 19 passes for just 133 yards. Wentz did toss three touchdowns -- 39 and nine yards to Justin Jefferson, 16 yards to T.J. Hockenson -- but otherwise he managed the game and didn't commit a turnover. O'Connell relayed to Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com that he expects Murray to clear the concussion protocol next week, so Sunday's nod could be Wentz's last for some time.

Vikings' Carson Wentz: To start if Murray unavailable
Wentz "is likely to start" Sunday against the Bears if Kyler Murray does not clear concussion protocol, Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports.
Wentz was named the backup quarterback last week and led the Vikings to a Week 1 comeback victory over the Packers, so although fellow reserve J.J. McCarthy would also be an option, Wentz appears to be the favorite to get the nod should Murray be unable to go.
