Jordan Payton: Waived by Browns
Payton was waived by the Browns on Saturday, Andrew Gribble of the team's official site reports.
Payton's chances of making the team were likely nullified after the Browns reached a deal to acquire Sammie Coates from the Steelers. Payton could be a candidate for the roster spot if he clears waivers.

Browns' Jordan Payton: Scores long touchdown Thursday
Payton caught a 45-yard touchdown pass on his lone target Thursday against the Saints.
Payton is currently buried on the Browns' depth chart, but he was able to show his big-play ability when he caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from DeShone Kizer on Thursday. The 23-year-old was suspended for the final four games of the 2016 season for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy, so he may have to work extra hard to earn a roster spot.

Browns' Jordan Payton: Four-game suspension on tap
Payton has been suspended for the final four games of the season for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances.
Payton will be eligible to return to the Browns' active roster following the team's final game of the season, which is on Jan. 1. The 2016 fifth-round rounder will thus look to carve out a role with the team in 2017 after a rookie season that resulted in him catching just one pass for three yards in four games.

Browns' Jordan Payton: Inactive for second straight week
Payton (coach's decision) remains on the inactive list Sunday against the Ravens.
Payton will be a healthy scratch for the second straight week, as the rookie wideout doesn't appear to be any closer to carving out a role in the Cleveland offense.

Browns' Jordan Payton: Inactive Sunday
Payton (coach's decision) is listed as inactive Sunday against the Eagles.
Payton, a fifth-round draft pick, did little of note in the preseason, hauling in just two passes for a total of 13 yards. On a Cleveland team with improved wide receiver depth, the UCLA product doesn't appear poised to work his way into the offensive game plan, a situation that won't get any easier following the return of Josh Gordon from a four-game suspension.

Jordan Payton: Selected by Browns in fifth round
The Browns selected Payton in the 2016 NFL Draft, 154th overall.
The UCLA product led the Bruins in receptions and receiving yards in each of his last two seasons on campus, combining for 145 catches and 2,060 yards in that span. He has more speed than one would guess on tape given his thick frame, but he was able to run a 4.47 40-yard dash at the Combine. Payton does have some trouble reaching that maximum speed off the line, however, which could be a problem against NFL level press coverage. In all, he does fit a need for the Browns in that he offers some size and ability to work the intermediate routes opposite speed demon Corey Coleman.
