  • Luke Altmyer: Added to Lions' practice squad

The Lions signed Altmyer to the practice squad Monday.

Altmyer appeared in three preseason games for the Lions in 2026, throwing for 271 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions off 29-for-46 passing. While he didn't play the best throughout the preseason, he still did enough to earn a spot on Detroit's practice squad.

  • Lions' Luke Altmyer: Struggles in final audition Saturday

Altmyer completed seven of 11 passes for 55 yards and an interception in Saturday's 25-16 preseason win over the Colts. He also gained two yards on two carries and committed two fumbles, losing one.

The undrafted rookie got the start at quarterback for the Lions in their final exhibition contest and played the first and third quarters as the battle to be Jared Goff's primary backup goes down to the wire, but veteran Joshua Dobbs put up superior numbers while running the offense in the second and fourth quarters. Altmyer did lead a 10-play, 75-yard TD drive to close out the first quarter, punctuated by a Trayveon Williams one-yard plunge, but his other four possessions ended in turnovers or punts. If he sticks on the Lions' roster, it will likely be as the No. 3 QB.

  • Lions' Luke Altmyer: One TD, three turnovers in debut

Altmyer completed 13 of 22 passes for 130 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Thursday's 16-14 preseason loss to the Bengals. He also rushed four times for one yard, ran in a two-point conversion and lost a fumble.

Altmyer played most of the game in his NFL debut, but the undrafted rookie out of Illinois didn't help his chances of winning the second spot on Detroit's QB depth chart. He threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Tarik Black with 1:28 left in the fourth quarter and ran in the ensuing two-point conversion, but Altmyer also turned the ball over three times. The recently signed Joshua Dobbs seems likely to beat out Altmyer for the backup role, but both options will likely see action int he team's next preseason game, Aug. 22 against the Commanders.

  • Lions' Luke Altmyer: Chance at No. 2

Altmyer will have a chance to compete for the No. 2 quarterback role, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Altmyer is set to receive a ton of No. 2 reps after former Lions backup Teddy Bridgewater stated he is likely retiring. Altmyer, an undrafted free agent out of Illinois, is set to compete with whichever veteran backup the Lions bring in. The quarterback completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,007 yards and 22 touchdowns, throwing just five interceptions, over 13 games in his final collegiate season. He also added 242 rushing yards for five touchdowns on the ground during the campaign with more than 100 attempts.

  • Luke Altmyer: Headed to Detroit

Altmyer is slated to sign with the Lions as an undrafted free agent, Matt Zenitz of CBSSports.com reports.

Altmyer's best football trait is his brain. The fifth-year senior out of Illinois is a clutch passer, leading seven game-winning drives in the final minute or overtime in his career. The quarterback consistently finds clear sight lines and can deliver accurate balls with nice touch and rhythm. Despite not being wildly athletic, he is adept at finding an escape route when the pocket collapses. The root of all Altmyer's weaknesses is his lack of transcendent athleticism. He doesn't throw with power, is undersized, doesn't have exceptional ball security and has a lack of poise in the pocket. The positive news about a potential signing with the Lions is that Jared Goff isn't an exceptional athlete either by NFL standards, and the ability to learn from the pocket passer in an effort to fix some of these weaknesses could lead to future opportunities in the NFL for the 23-year-old.
