Miller carried the ball 14 times for 55 yards and failed to catch his only target in Thursday's 13-13 preseason tie with the Colts.
Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson both sat out the Patriots' preseason opener, allowing Miller to get the start and handle the bulk of the work on the ground -- the rest of the RBs in the lineup combined for 27 yards on 17 carries. The 2026 seventh-round is battling Lan Larison, Hassan Haskins and JaMycal Hasty for the RB3 role to open the season, and Miller may have improved his chances of claiming it with Thursday's effort.

Lead candidate Terrell Jennings (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve Thursday, increasing Miller's odds of securing the No. 3 role. Miller has been taking kickoff-return reps during training camp, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.
As camp progresses, Miller, who the Patriots took in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, continues to compete for slotting in the team's backfield behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. While Lazar notes that Lan Larison has been getting the first crack at reps behind the top duo thus far, Miller could still push for the No. 3 RB role down the road, with his ability in the return game boosting his chances of securing a roster spot ahead of Week 1. Also in the mix for depth roles in New England's backfield are are Terrell Jennings and Myles Montgomery.

Miller, who was taken by New England in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, was a core special-teamer early on in his college career at Alabama, which could help his chances of securing a role as a rookie. Per Lazar, the No. 3 job behind Stevenson and Henderson figures to go to "whoever offers the most juice as a returner and can fill in when needed in the offensive backfield."

Patriots' Jam Miller: Headed to New England
The Patriots selected Miller in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, 245th overall.
Miller spent his entire four-year college career at Alabama, taking over a regular role on offense in 2024, resulting in 15 starts over the last two seasons. He possesses the size to handle the rigors of an NFL campaign at 5-foot-10, 209 pounds and does a good job with ball security (two fumbles in his college career) and falling forward on runs. On top of that, he put up an impressive 4.42 40-time at the NFL Combine. That said, he doesn't typically play as fast as his time and can struggle in pass blocking, hence his seventh-round selection. Miller will be tasked with etching out a role somewhere on the depth chart behind the two players locked in atop the running back room in Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson.
