  • Rams' Ty Simpson: Opening season as emergency No. 3 QB

Simpson is inactive as the Rams' emergency third quarterback for Thursday's matchup against San Francisco in Melbourne, Australia, Nate Atkins of The Athletic reports. It thus appears Stetson Bennett has won Los Angeles' No. 2 QB job, at least for the first game of the season. Simpson, who was taken by the Rams in the first round of April's NFL Draft, can make his NFL debut Thursday only if both starter Matthew Stafford and Bennett have to exit due to injury, illness, or ejection.

  • Rams' Ty Simpson: Extended playing time Thursday

Simpson completed 18 of 23 passes for 119 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions while also rushing three times for 10 yards in the Rams' 20-18 preseason win over the Chargers on Thursday. Simpson drew the start and initially played the entire first half before reentering the game in the latter portion of the fourth quarter without attempting another pass. The rookie 13th overall pick put together a solid first two quarters, connecting with Brennan Presley for an 11-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Simpson did nothing to hurt his chances of earning the No. 2 quarterback job this preseason -- he completed 47 of 60 passes (78.3 percent) for 382 yards with a 3:0 TD:INT and added seven rushes for 19 yards -- but it remains to be seen whether he did enough to beat out the more experienced Stetson Bennett for the role.

  • Rams' Ty Simpson: Will play in preseason opener

Head coach Sean McVay said Saturday that Simpson will "definitely" play in the Rams' preseason opener against the Chiefs on Saturday, Aug. 15, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports. Matthew Stafford may get some work in the first series of work, and there's uncertainty over whether Stetson Bennett will play. As such, Simpson figures to see the bulk of the reps on offense for the Rams' first preseason game, with undrafted rookie Matthew Caldwell also in the mix for some playing time. Simpson was a first-round pick of the Rams in the 2026 NFL Draft, but Bennett has taken the bulk of second-team reps in training camp, so the rookie out of Alabama could operate as the Rams' QB3 for the upcoming season, per Nate Atkins of The Athletic.

  • Rams' Ty Simpson: Agrees to rookie contract

Simpson agreed to terms on a four-year, $25.4 million rookie contract with the Rams on Saturday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Simpson's contract comes with a $14.9 million signing bonus and a fifth-year option. He was selected by the Rams with the 13th pick of the 2026 NFL Draft as the apparent franchise successor to reigning MVP Matthew Stafford. Simpson isn't guaranteed the backup job and will compete against Stetson Bennett for that job in training camp.

  • Rams' Ty Simpson: Selected by Rams

The Rams selected Simpson in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, 13th overall. In what might go down as the most shocking pick of the first round, the Rams picked Simpson as their quarterback of the future at the 13th pick, something around 20 slots earlier than most projected Simpson to go off the board. Simpson (6-foot-1, 211 pounds) only started one year at Alabama and posted troubling efficiency numbers (64.5 percent completed, 7.5 YPA), but to be fair the surrounding cast at Alabama was probably the worst it has been in some number of years. The Rams know Matthew Stafford and his creaky back can only take so many more hits, and with the Simpson selection the team resolved to get ahead of whenever Stafford has to hang up the cleats.
