Hawkins joined the Rams' practice squad after short stints with the Titans and Falcons, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2021 out of Louisville. He was elevated to the active roster for Week 14 against the Cardinals, but he never saw the field. Hawkins' best season at Louisville was in 2019 when he rushed for 1,525 yards (5.8 YPC) and nine touchdowns over 13 games, and he was impressive in 2020 with 822 yards (6.2 YPC) and seven scores as well. However, the 21-year-old is undersized, measuring in at 5-foot-8, 183 pounds. He could end up filling a role on Tennessee's practice squad.

Hawkins has attracted an unusual amount of fantasy attention for an undrafted rookie, in part because the team he initially signed with (the Falcons) is among the league's weakest in the backfield. With each of the team's top backs rested for the game, Hawkins worked behind Caleb Huntley in the preseason opener. Their final workload evened out, though Hawkins was largely unimpressive with his opportunities. His longest rush of the game went for just two yards, and he was routinely stuffed at the line of scrimmage. Hawkins is in competition with both Huntley and D'Onta Foreman for a roster spot, though he didn't do himself a ton of favors in the preseason opener.
