  • Steven Sims: Dropped by Houston

The Texans waived Sims on Friday. Before being waived Friday, Sims appeared in seven games with the Texans in 2024, recording 195 kick-return yards and 99 punt-return yards across 72 total snaps (nine offensive and 63 on special teams). Sims could draw significant interest on the free-agent market from teams in need of a return specialist.

  • Texans' Steven Sims: Healthy scratch Sunday

Sims (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's matchup with the Dolphins. Sims is a depth receiver behind a group of healthy starters and reserves in Nico Collins, Tank Dell, John Metchie, Robert Woods and Xavier Hutchinson. Even when Collins was out for five weeks with a hamstring injury, Sims only played on eight offensive snaps.

  • Texans' Steven Sims: Healthy scratch again Week 12

Sims (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's clash against the Titans. Sims was also a healthy scratch last week against Dallas. The veteran wideout has served as receiver depth while working primarily on special teams through much of the campaign, but the Texans have less need for his role with Nico Collins in his second week back from a stint on injured reserve. Even during the five weeks Collins was out, Sims logged just eight offensive snaps over three contests.

  • Texans' Steven Sims: Special teams contributor in loss

Sims returned three punts for 43 yards in Sunday's 26-23 loss to Detroit. Sims served as Houston's primary return specialist for the second consecutive week, although he didn't record a kickoff return. He played just two snaps on offense and has lined up on that side of the ball just 10 times in 2024. With Nico Collins (IR, hamstring) on the verge of returning, likely in Week 11, Sims' spot on the gameday roster may be in jeopardy.

  • Texans' Steven Sims: Won't play Week 8

Sims (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Colts. Sims wasn't able to play in Week 7 due to a back injury. He returned to practice this week and was able to participate without restrictions, but he will remain on the sidelines as a healthy scratch for Sunday's contest. Smith's next chance to suit up will be Thursday night against the Jets.

  • Texans' Steven Sims: Won't travel to Green Bay

Sims (back) has been downgraded from questionable to out ahead of Sunday's game against the Packers. Sims was a late addition to the Texans' injury report Friday due to a back issue. While he was initially listed as questionable, the injury is severe enough that Sims will not travel with the team to Green Bay, and his next chance at suiting up will be Week 8 against the Colts on Oct. 27. With Robert Woods (foot) also not playing Sunday, Dameon Pierce and Tank Dell are the likely candidates to serve kickoff and punt-return duties, respectively.

  • Texans' Steven Sims: Muffed punt leads to points

Sims wasn't targeted over two offensive snaps, returned two punts for 10 yards and muffed a punt in Sunday's 24-20 win over Jacksonville. After the Jaguars' initial drive of the game stalled, Sims had the mishap on a punt return, putting the visitors in business at Houston's two-yard line. From there, Trevor Lawrence found rookie Brian Thomas in the end zone for an early 7-0 lead. Sims has operated as the Texans' primary returner of punts and also handles kickoffs as well. That he was back returning kicks following the miscue suggests his return role still is intact. Sims also played on offense for first time in four games, as Houston was without Tank Dell (chest).

  • Texans' Steven Sims: Makes 53-man roster

Sims made the Texans' initial 53-man roster Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Sims was one of seven wide receivers to claim a roster spot, and his ability to contribute as a return man in the main reason. The 27-year-old, who returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown during last season's playoff loss to the Ravens, averaged 12.3 yards on four punt returns and 23.7 yards on three kick returns in 2023.

  • Texans' Steven Sims: Re-signing with Houston

Sims agreed Wednesday to re-sign with the Texans, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. In three regular-season appearance and one postseason game with the Texans in 2023, Sims caught three passes for 25 yards and ran once for one yard. He also served as a return man on punts and kickoffs, and his continued success in that capacity during the Texans' offseason program and the preseason will likely represent his best path to winning a roster spot with Houston to begin the 2024 season.

  • Texans' Steven Sims: Diagnosed with concussion

Sims suffered a concussion in Saturday's divisional-round loss to Baltimore, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Sims scored the only touchdown of the game for Houston, returning a punt 67 yards for a score in the second quarter. He didn't record any targets in the passing game, however, and suffered a concussion during the contest. With the Texans eliminated from the postseason, Sims will look to get well as he heads into the offseason as a free agent.

  • Texans' Steven Sims: Signed from Texans' practice squad

Sims was signed to the Texans' active roster Tuesday. Sims had been on Houston's practice squad, but he has become a full-fledged member of the team ahead of Saturday's divisional round game against the Ravens. The former Washington and Pittsburgh wide receiver appeared in three games for the Texans during the regular season. Sims could see some opportunities on offense with Noah Brown (shoulder) on IR, but he's likely to be deployed primarily as a return man on special teams.

  • Steven Sims: Returns to practice squad

Sims reverted to the Texans' practice squad Monday. Sims was elevated to the active roster ahead of the team's Week 15 overtime win over the Titans, operating mostly as a special-teams option. He turned three kick returns into 71 yards while also returning two punts for 33 yards. Sims also played seven offensive snaps, catching one pass for no gain and gaining a yard on his only carry. The wide receiver's biggest impact may have come when he recovered a fumble by quarterback Case Keenum. Sims could be asked to return to the active roster again in Week 16 if Nico Collins (calf) is unavailable versus the Browns.

  • Steven Sims: Reverts to practice squad

Sims reverted to Houston's practice squad Monday. Sims saw playing time on both offense and special teams Sunday and recorded a fair catch his lone punt-return opportunity. The 26-year-old has appeared in two games this season for Houston and is now eligible to be elevated just once more before he'd have to be signed to the active roster.

  • Steven Sims: Won't make team

Sims was cut by the Texans on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Sims spent the last two seasons with the Steelers operating as a return man and depth receiver, and he was working to earn a similar role in Houston. However, it appears the Texans will opt to go with Mike Boone and Tank Dell in the kick and punt return roles respectively.

  • Steelers' Steven Sims: Racks up 16 yards in win

Sims rushed once for 16 yards during the Steelers' 28-14 win over the Browns on Sunday. Sims played at least 34 percent of the Steelers' offensive snaps in each of the final nine games of the season, but he saw inconsistent touches and wasn't a reliable fantasy option. Over 12 appearances, he secured 14 of 23 targets for 104 yards while rushing 13 times for 70 yards. He's slated to become a restricted free agent during the offseason, and it's unclear whether he'll be back with the Steelers in 2023. The 25-year-old served as the team's return man down the stretch but is unlikely to carry much fantasy value if he remains in Pittsburgh next year.

  • Steelers' Steven Sims: Tallies 34 receiving yards

Sims secured three of four targets for 34 yards during the Steelers' 16-13 win over the Ravens on Sunday. Sims matched his highest target total of the season during Sunday's primetime matchup, and he racked up a season-high 34 yards, highlighted by a 28-yard reception late in the fourth quarter. Although the 25-year-old's production has remained inconsistent, he's now had double-digit yards from scrimmage over the last five games, and he's secured nine of 13 targets for 81 yards while rushing six times for 39 yards during that time.

  • Steelers' Steven Sims: Tallies four receptions in Week 14

Sims secured all four of his targets for 30 yards while rushing once for one yard during the Steelers' 16-14 loss to Baltimore on Sunday. Sims had three carries during last week's win over Atlanta, and he logged a season-high five touches during Sunday's narrow loss while also playing a season-high 47 percent of the Steelers' offensive snaps. While it's been encouraging to see Sims' playing time increase over the last few weeks, he hasn't been consistent enough to warrant fantasy consideration in most formats.

  • Steelers' Steven Sims: Likely in line for increased role

Sims will likely have more opportunities to pick up snaps out of the slot going forward after Chase Claypool was traded to the Bears on Tuesday, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports. Sims drew a season-high three targets during Sunday's loss to the Eagles but managed minus-1 yard on two receptions while rushing twice for 21 yards. He's mainly returned kicks for the Steelers when available early in the season, but head coach Mike Tomlin said Wednesday that Sims should see additional work on offense after Claypool was traded. The Steelers have a Week 9 bye, so Sims will have an additional week to prepare for his new role in the team's offense. However, given that he's drawn just three targets over three games this season, it's unclear whether Sims will see enough volume in the passing game to be a fantasy-relevant player over the second half of the year.

  • Steelers' Steven Sims: Limited Wednesday

Sims (hamstring) was a limited participant during Wednesday's practice, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official website reports. Sims was sidelined for the team's Week 7 loss to Miami due to a hamstring injury he picked up a week prior. The return specialist didn't practice at all last week, so his return Wednesday, albeit in a limited fashion, is certainly encouraging. Sims will have two more opportunities to upgrade to a full participant before the team needs to make a decision on his status for Sunday's matchup against the Eagles.

  • Steelers' Steven Sims: Not listed on injury report

Sims wasn't listed on the Steelers' injury report Wednesday, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reprots. Sims suffered an eye injury during pregame warmups ahead of the team's Week 5 loss to the Steelers and didn't get onto the field until the second quarter. The extent of the situation remains unclear, but he appears to have cleared the issue and should reprise his role as the Steelers' top kicker returner in Week 6.
