And the snipe was Matthews' 436th goal in his 700th career game, tying Pavel Bure for the sixth most by an NHL player through that mile marker, behind Hall-of-Famers Wayne Gretzky (589), Mario Lemieux (580), Mike Bossy (542), Brett Hull (504) and Jari Kurri (454). Matthews is on fire so far this season. He has five points (two goals, three assists) in his last two games and 18 points, including eight goals, in 11 contests so far. Both of those marks put him in a tie for second in the league thus far.

We're watching his shooting volume carefully, as his 26 shots so far would put him shy of the 300-plus mark that he put up annually for his three-best seasons earlier this decade. Matthews was held off the scoresheet in the first two games of the season, but he's since rattled off a five-game streak. He's earned five goals and seven assists in that span, including four power-play points. That's the Matthews we're more familiar with, compared to what he's done in a couple of down years recently. The star center has added 25 shots on net, four hits, six blocked shots and a plus-3 rating through seven appearances. If he can stay healthy and continue to average around four shots per game, he shouldn't have much trouble getting back above the 40-goal mark.

Matthews (knee) has been on the ice for informal skates ahead of training camp and "looks amazing," according to teammate Chris Tanev, Mark Masters of TSN reports Thursday.
Matthews had surgery back in March to repair an MCL injury and looks poised to resume his place on the first line for the Maple Leafs. In his 60 regular-season games last year, the 28-year-old center notched 27 goals and 26 assists, including 12 power-play points. If he can stay healthy, Matthews should be in the mix for the Rocket Trophy at the end of the year.
