  • Islanders' Bo Horvat: Remains day-to-day

Horvat (lower body) continues to be considered day-to-day ahead of Tuesday's matchup with Carolina, Stefen Rosner of NHL.com reports.

The fact that Horvat is traveling with the Islanders is certainly good news, though he was also held out of Sunday's game against Chicago while being considered day-to-day ahead of that contest. With New York notoriously stingy on player injury updates, fantasy managers may have to wait until puck drop to see if Horvat is actually suiting up versus Carolina on Tuesday.

  • Islanders' Grant Hutton: Playing time trending down

Hutton has been scratched for nine of the last 14 games after he sat out Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Blackhawks.

The Islanders have gotten Alexander Romanov and Adam Pelech back from injuries over the last few weeks, creating a crowded blue line. Hutton is currently filling a reserve role, and the team wants to get Isaiah George more of a look as well. Barring further injuries on the blue line, don't expect Hutton to play regularly moving forward. He has two helpers, 10 shots on net, 12 hits and 11 blocked shots through 12 appearances.

  • Islanders' Kyle MacLean: Nabs assist Sunday

MacLean notched an assist and four shots on goal in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Blackhawks.

MacLean has two points over his last four games, but offense will be tough to come by since he remains in a fourth-line role. The 25-year-old center is at five points, 22 shots on net, 40 hits and a minus-5 rating over 32 appearances. He had nine points in 32 regular-season outings last year. MacLean may be scratched or moved to the wing once Bo Horvat (lower body) returns to action.

  • Islanders' Pierre Engvall: Puts up assist Sunday

Engvall notched an assist, two hits and a plus-2 rating in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Blackhawks.

Engvall was waived Friday, but he remains in the NHL for now, though he's on shaky ground for sticking around. If he plays in every game moving forward, he would exhaust his current waivers exemption Jan. 9. Engvall may lose his place in the lineup or on the roster earlier than that, as Anthony Duclair (lower body) and Bo Horvat (lower body) could be close to returns. Engvall has seven points, 27 shots on net and a minus-1 rating over 21 appearances.

  • Islanders' Maxim Tsyplakov: Offers helper in defeat

Tsyplakov logged an assist, two PIM, one blocked shot and three hits in 16:12 of ice time in Sunday's 5-3 loss to Chicago.

Tsyplakov recorded the secondary assist on Noah Dobson's third-period tally, which concluded the scoring for the Isles. Tsyplakov has points in back-to-back outings, but he hasn't a had a point streak of at least three games in his first NHL season. He'll be hard-pressed to accomplish that feat on the road Tuesday against a Hurricanes club that allows just 2.87 goals per game, ninth-fewest in the league. Tsyplakov has compiled six goals (one game-winner), 12 helpers, 22 PIM, 46 shots and a plus-9 rating through 32 contests.

  • Islanders' Brock Nelson: Notches apple in loss

Nelson produced an even-strength assist in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Blackhawks.

Nelson picked up the primary assist on Noah Dobson's fourth goal of the season early in the third period. Nelson has dished an assist in three consecutive games, but he's mired in a nine-game goal drought. The left-shot center has struggled on the man advantage as well -- he has just one power-play goal this season after potting nine in 2023-24. Nelson is up 10 goals and 20 points while averaging 19:18 of ice time through 32 games. He'll look to extend his point streak to four games Tuesday against the Hurricanes.

  • Islanders' Simon Holmstrom: Pots goal Sunday

Holmstrom scored a goal on two shots and went plus-1 in 16:26 of ice time Sunday in a 5-3 loss to the Blackhawks.

Holmstrom was on the receiving end of a pass from Pierre Engvall that banked off the former's skate past Arvid Soderblom early in the second period. Holmstrom has produced two goals and two assists over the last two games after registering just one helper across his previous five outings. The Swedish winger has been relatively productive in a third-line role and on the No. 2 power-play unit -- he's up to nine goals and 19 points (four on the man advantage) through 32 games. Holmstrom is shooting at a 25.0 percent clip, though, which is likely to regress over the course of the season.

  • Islanders' Noah Dobson: Goals in back-to-back games

Dobson netted an even-strength goal on eight shots and added one block, three hits and one takeaway in a team-high 24:26 of ice time in Sunday's 5-3 loss to Chicago.

Dobson has now scored in two straight games, and he's picked up the pace in December with three goals and eight points through seven contests. The right-shot blueliner logged 10 points (one goal) through the first 25 games of the campaign, so he seems to have settled in after a shaky start to 2024-25. Dobson's production could increase even more in the near future as Mathew Barzal (upper body) returned from a 21-game absence Sunday, and Anthony Duclair (lower body) is nearing a return. All three of those players will likely serve on the No. 1 power-play unit when healthy. Dobson leads all Islanders defensemen in scoring with four goals and 18 points through 32 appearances.

  • Islanders' Ryan Pulock: Finds back of net in defeat

Pulock scored his first goal of the season in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Blackhawks.

Pulock beat Arvid Soderblom with a slap shot to tie the game at 1-1 late in the first period. The 30-year-old blueliner has gotten on the scoresheet in back-to-back games after recording just one assist over his previous seven outings. Pulock has accumulated one goal, 10 helpers, eight PIM, 45 shots on goal and a plus-5 rating while averaging 22:46 of ice time through 32 contests. The Manitoba native will attempt to earn his first three-game point streak of the season against Carolina on Tuesday.

  • Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Allows late goal in defeat

Sorokin conceded four goals on 22 shots Sunday in a 5-3 loss to the Blackhawks. The fifth marker was an empty-netter.

Sorokin defeated the Blackhawks at home Thursday, but the Isles had another third-period collapse Sunday. Connor Bedard was able to squeak one past the Russian netminder with under a minute remaining to give Chicago a 4-3 lead. Sorokin has made eight consecutive starts, and he'll need to continue shouldering the load between the pipes as Semyon Varlamov (lower body) was placed on injured reserve Saturday. Sorokin will likely get the start Tuesday against Carolina, but he should benefit from New York's following game not coming until Saturday in Toronto. The 29-year-old has a 9-9-4 record, .906 save percentage and 2.71 GAA through 22 appearances.

  • Islanders' Bo Horvat: Not playing Sunday

Horvat (lower body) won't play against Chicago on Sunday, according to Stefen Rosner of NHL.com.

Horvat is day-to-day and will miss at least one game. He has accounted for eight goals, 22 points and 86 shots on net across 31 appearances this campaign. Mathew Barzal (upper body) will replace Horvat in Sunday's lineup.

  • Islanders' Pierre Engvall: Remains with team

Engvall is still with the Islanders ahead of Sunday's game against Chicago, according to the NHL media site.

Engvall didn't practice Saturday after being placed on waivers Friday but could play in Sunday's matchup if Bo Horvat (lower body) is unavailable. The 28-year-old Engvall has three goals, six points and 26 shots on net in 20 appearances this season.

  • Islanders' Mathew Barzal: Removed from LTIR

Barzal (upper body) was activated from long-term injured reserve Sunday, per the NHL media site.

Barzal will presumably return to the lineup against Chicago on Sunday after missing the last 21 games. He has generated two goals, three assists and 23 shots on net through 10 appearances this season. Barzal will likely slot back in on the top line and first power-play unit versus the Blackhawks.

  • Islanders' Semyon Varlamov: Shifts to IR

Varlamov (lower body) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, per the NHL media site.

Varlamov has been dealing with a lower-body issue since Dec. 2, and he hasn't played since Nov. 29 against Washington. He has posted a 3-4-3 record with a 2.89 GAA and an .889 save percentage across 10 appearances this season. It's unclear when he will be ready to return, but he didn't accompany the Islanders on the team's upcoming three-game road trip.

  • Islanders' Bo Horvat: Deemed day-to-day

Horvat (lower body) is day-to-day and could play Sunday versus Chicago, per Stefen Rosner of NHL.com.

Horvat will accompany the Islanders on the team's three-game road trip, which begins Sunday against the Blackhawks. He has generated eight goals, 22 points and 86 shots on net across 31 appearances this campaign.

  • Islanders' Anthony Duclair: Doubtful Sunday

Per Stefen Rosner of NHL.com, Duclair (lower body) is unlikely to play Sunday in Chicago, according to coach Patrick Roy.

Roy stated Saturday that it's more likely that Duclair will return in Carolina on Tuesday. Duclair was injured against Montreal on Oct. 19, and Sunday's tilt will be the 27th game in a row that Duclair will sit out. Duclair was off to a good start with a pair of goals and an assist in five appearances before his injury.

  • Islanders' Semyon Varlamov: Won't travel with team

Varlamov (lower body) won't travel with the Islanders ahead of Sunday's game in Chicago, Stefen Rosner of NHL.com.

Varlamov, who hasn't played since Nov. 29, still appears to be a ways away from returning as the Isles head out on a three-game road trip. The 36-year-old netminder has gone 3-4-3 with a 2.89 GAA and an .889 save percentage this season. Varlamov's next chance to suit up will likely come Dec. 23 when the Islanders return home to face Buffalo.
