  Asche accepted a position Wednesday on the Phillies' player development staff, signaling the end of his playing career, Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. Asche will transition into his post-playing career with the Phillies' Low-A affiliate in Clearwater, where he'll serve as a hitting coach. The 30-year-old spent parts of five seasons in the big leagues with the Phillies and White Sox, accruing a .234/.293/.376 slash line and 32 home runs over 1,349 career plate appearances.

• Twins' Cody Asche: Inks minors deal with Twins

  Asche signed a minor-league contract with the Twins on Thursday. Asche has not appeared in the majors since 2017, when he played in 19 games with the White Sox. The 29-year-old struggled in limited action at the Double-A level last season, recording a .655 OPS with one home run and 28 strikeouts over 23 games. Given Asche's past experience in the big leagues, it wouldn't be surprising if he's a non-roster invitee during spring training.

It's unclear if the deal includes an invitation to spring training, but Asche figures to open (and spend most of) the season in the minors either way. The 28-year-old split time between Triple-A Las Vegas (Mets) and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2018, hitting a combined .220/.304/.399 with 11 homers in 105 games. Across parts of five major-league seasons (390 games), Asche owns a career .234/.293/.376 slash line.
