• Angels' Jose Urena: Effectively wild in no-decision

  Urena didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Twins, allowing one run on four hits and four walks over four innings. He struck out three. The journeyman right-hander threw only 36 of 71 pitches for strikes before getting the hook and put runners in scoring position in three of his four frames, but Urena was able to hold the damage to a James Outman solo shot in the third inning. The Halos haven't indicated that they intend to switch to a six-man rotation, so Urena will likely return to a long-relief role despite his success with his MLB record-tying fifth big-league team of 2025. Over two appearances and nine innings for the Angels, he's posted a 1.00 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 9:4 K:BB.

  Urena will start Wednesday's game against the Twins, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports. The Angels have decided to give Urena a spot start so that their regular rotation members can have some extra rest. Urena struck out six over five scoreless frames in an extended relief outing last Friday versus the Athletics in his first appearance for the Halos. Unless the Angels decide to switch to a six-man rotation down the stretch, Urena will likely shift to long relief after Wednesday's outing.

The right-hander elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Twins last week, but he was able to find another home in the majors. Urena had made 13 appearances (five starts) with four different MLB clubs this season and has a 5.00 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 20:13 K:BB over 36 innings. After placing Tyler Anderson (oblique) on the injured list Sunday and optioning Jack Kochanowicz to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday, the Angels have two open spots in the rotation, and Urena is a good bet to fill one of those slots during the team's upcoming series in Kansas City.

Rather than sticking around in the Twins organization as a depth arm at Triple-A St. Paul, Urena will enter free agency and look for an opportunity elsewhere. Urena was tagged for six runs on seven hits and two walks across five innings in Thursday's loss to the Athletics. The Twins booted Urena from the 40-man and 26-man rosters in order to make room for Mick Abel's expected promotion ahead of Saturday's start.
