• Braves' Grant Holmes: Begins throwing program

  Holmes (elbow) began his throwing program Monday, Grant McAuley of the Marietta Daily Journal reports. Holmes has already been ruled out for the remainder of this season after he was diagnosed with a partially torn UCL in his right elbow in early August. The goal is for the righty to continue to ramp up his throwing over the next two months and head into the offseason and spring training without restrictions. However, given the nature of Holmes' injury, the possibility of setbacks are there.

• Braves' Grant Holmes: Shifted to 60-day IL

  Atlanta transferred Holmes (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday. Earlier Sunday, Atlanta placed Holmes on the 15-day IL due to right elbow inflammation, but the club's decision to shift him to the 60-day IL suggests that follow-up tests may have revealed a more significant injury. As a result of the transaction, the earliest Holmes could return to action is Sept. 26, so his season his most likely over. The transaction will open up a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Erick Fedde, whom Atlanta acquired from St. Louis on Sunday and could immediately slot into the rotation. Over his 21 starts prior to landing on the IL, Holmes posted a 4-9 record, 3.99 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 123:54 K:BB in 115 innings.

• Braves' Grant Holmes: Moves to injured list

  Atlanta placed Holmes on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to right elbow inflammation. The right-hander exited his start in Saturday's 6-5 loss to the Rangers after four innings due to the injury, and he'll be sidelined for at least the next couple of weeks and potentially longer. Atlanta now has all five members of its Opening Day rotation on the IL, with Holmes joining Chris Sale (ribs), Spencer Schwellenbach (elbow), Reynaldo Lopez (shoulder) and AJ Smith-Shawver (elbow) on the shelf.

  Holmes took a no-decision Friday against the Cardinals, giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks in three innings. He struck out one. It was one of the worst outings of the season for Holmes, who established a season low in strikeouts and yielded his most runs since May 7. Friday marked the 29-year-old right-hander's shortest appearance among his 19 starts, and the nine hits allowed set a season high. Holmes still owns a steady 3.77 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 119:50 K:BB across 105 frames ahead of the All-Star break, and his spot should remain solidified in Atlanta's injury-ravaged rotation.

• Braves' Grant Holmes: Quality start in loss

  Holmes (4-8) took the loss Sunday against the Orioles, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out five. While he was ultimately outdueled by Trevor Rogers in a 2-1 loss, Holmes delivered another strong performance Sunday. The right-hander has pitched to a 1.86 ERA over his last five starts (29 innings) while striking out 41 in that span. Overall, Holmes sports a 3.44 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP and 118:48 K:BB across 102 innings this season. He's currently slated to face the Cardinals on the road his next time out.
