  Luzardo (1-0) got the win on Saturday versus the Nationals, striking out 11 batters while allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. The left-hander made his Phillies' debut and was electric aside from a two-run homer off the bat of Keibert Ruiz, Luzardo struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth inning and then watched his offense erupt for five runs in the top of the sixth inning to break open a 2-2 tie, putting him in line for the win. Sitting at 95 pitches, his day was done from there. Luzardo is lined up for a tough matchup against the Dodgers next week.

The left-hander also touched 98 mph with his sinker, which had an average velocity of 94.8 mph last season. The left-hander said he's "felt 100 percent the whole offseason" and is going through his normal throwing program. Acquired by the Phillies from the Marlins via trade in December, Luzardo posted a 5.00 ERA while being limited to just 12 starts in 2024 due to a flexor strain and back problem, but the 27-year-old is confident he can bounce back with his new team now that he's healthy. The 27-year-old lefty was nearly acquired by the Cubs earlier in the week, and it didn't take long for the Marlins to hammer out a deal with a new trade partner. Luzardo had a 5.00 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 12 starts in 2024 as he missed the final three-plus months of the campaign due to a lumbar stress reaction. However, he had a 3.48 ERA and 10.6 K/9 in 279 innings across the previous two seasons and is under team control for two more years. Luzardo bolsters a strong Phillies rotation that already features Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suarez and Cristopher Sanchez.
