Josh Naylor 1B | SEA
Guardians' Josh Naylor: In Saturday's lineup as DH
Naylor (ankle) will serve as the designated hitter and bat cleanup against the Pirates on Saturday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
A bruised left ankle forced Naylor from Friday's game, but apparently he'll be able to tough it out with the help of the DH tag. He was in the midst of a brutally cold stretch in mid-to-late August, but Naylor has turned it on recently with six hits in his last two games.

Yandy Diaz 1B | TB
Rays' Yandy Diaz: Sitting out Saturday
Diaz (knee) isn't in the Rays' lineup for Saturday's game against the Padres, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports.
After exiting Friday's game in the fourth inning due to left knee patellar tendinitis, Diaz will take an extra day off to recover. The 33-year-old first baseman said Saturday that his knee still hurts a bit, though his treatment has helped his condition, and he expects to be back in the lineup within the next several days, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. In the meantime, Brandon Lowe will cover first base in Diaz's place while Christopher Morel fields second and Jonathan Aranda serves as the DH.

Tyler Soderstrom C | ATH
Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Could start hitting off machine
Soderstrom (wrist) continues in his hitting progression and could next hit foam balls off a pitching machine in coming days, Stephen Hawkins of the Associated Press reports.
The first baseman is making progress without any reported setbacks, keeping him on track for a return at some point before the end of the regular season. Soderstrom could begin hitting off the machine before the weekend is out, and if that step in the recovery process goes off without issue, a progression to swinging at baseballs may be next.

Ben Rice C | NYY
Yankees' Ben Rice: Not starting Saturday
Rice isn't in the Yankees' lineup Saturday against the Cardinals.
Rice went 0-for-3 in Friday's series opener after missing four consecutive games, and he'll take a seat again Saturday even though the right-handed Kyle Gibson will start on the hill for St. Louis. Oswaldo Cabrera will fill in as New York's first baseman and bat ninth.

Nate Lowe 1B | BOS
Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Snaps HR, RBI droughts
Lowe went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 9-2 loss to the Athletics.
Lowe tied the game at 1-1 with his solo blast in the second inning. The home run snapped a couple of droughts; it was his first home run in 17 games and first RBI in 15 contests. Lowe owns a .207/.284/.304 line during August.

Josh Naylor 1B | SEA
Guardians' Josh Naylor: Suffers bruised ankle Friday
Naylor was removed from Friday's game against the Pirates with a left ankle bruise, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Naylor seemed to roll his ankle as he hit an RBI single into right field during the eighth inning, causing Tyler Freeman to replace him as a pinch runner. He was diagnosed with an ankle contusion shortly after the game, so he appears to have avoided a serious injury. It's unclear if he'll be available for Saturday's contest.

Yandy Diaz 1B | TB
Rays' Yandy Diaz: Leaves game with trainer
Diaz was removed from Friday's game against the Padres with left knee patellar tendinitis, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Diaz went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer and a walk in Friday's game, but he had to be lifted for a pinch runner after he singled to left field in the fourth inning. It's unclear if he'll need to spend time on the injured list, but Jonathan Aranda, who entered as the pinch runner, could see an uptick of playing time at first base if Diaz needs to miss any amount of time.
-
Jonathan Singleton DH | HOU
Astros' Jon Singleton: On bench Friday
Singleton is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Kansas City.
Even with right-hander Seth Lugo starting for the Royals, the lefty-hitting Singleton will take a seat. Victor Caratini will fill in at first base and is batting cleanup.

Anthony Rizzo 1B | NYY
Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Could be activated Sunday
Rizzo (forearm) could be activated from the 60-day injured list when rosters expand Sunday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Rizzo has gone 2-for-8 with a home run and two walks in four rehab games with Double-A Somerset, serving as the designated hitter twice before playing first base the last two contests. He could play a full nine innings at first base Friday and rejoin the Yankees shortly after that. With the club struggling for production at first base, Rizzo should immediately become the primary option there, at least versus right-handed pitching.

Vinnie Pasquantino 1B | KC
Royals' Vinnie Pasquantino: Placed on IL
The Royals placed Pasquantino (thumb) on the 10-day injured list Friday.
Pasquantino was diagnosed with a fractured right thumb Friday and given a 6-8 week timeline for his return, ending the first baseman's 2024 season unless Kansas City makes a deep playoff run. The Royals recalled Nick Loftin from Triple-A Omaha to take Pasquantino's spot on the 26-man roster. Loftin and Salvador Perez should handle most of the work at first base down the stretch.
