  • Spencer Steer 1B | CIN

Reds' Spencer Steer: Starts at second base

Steer started at second base and went 0-for-2 with two walks and a run scored in Monday's 6-5 win over the Cubs.

Steer made his first start at the keystone and second appearance there this season. The injury to Jonathan India (foot) prompted position juggling for Reds manager David Bell. Matt McLain will be the primary fill-in at second, but it bears monitoring if Steer can squeeze out enough starts for position eligibility. He's also played first base (56 games), third base (33 games) and left field (19 games) in 2023.

  • Matthew Batten 3B | ATL

Padres' Matthew Batten: Logs three hits in loss

Batten went 3-for-4 with one RBI in Monday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Rockies.

This was Batten's first career three-hit effort, and he doubled his hit total for the season. The 28-year-old has logged just 19 plate appearances over 10 games, though he's started at first base twice in the last week. He has one home run, three RBI and two runs scored at the major-league level this season, but he's likely to remain primarily in a reserve role.

  • Matt Olson 1B | ATL

Braves' Matt Olson: Remains scorching hot Monday

Olson went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and two walks in a loss to the Angels on Monday.

Olson reached in all four of his plate appearances and was the only Atlanta hitter to get on base more than once in the contest. The first baseman also plated his team's only run with a solo shot in the fifth inning. Olson has gone deep four times in his past four games, going 7-for-14 with nine RBI over that span.

  • LaMonte Wade 1B | CHW

Giants' LaMonte Wade: Hitless in return

Wade (back) went 0-for-5 in Monday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Diamondbacks.

Wade had a three-game absence with back tightness. While the 29-year-old has settled in atop the order versus right-handed pitchers, he struggled in July, hitting just .180 with one extra-base hit and an 8:14 BB:K over 18 contests. With Wilmer Flores hitting well and in need of a steadier spot in the lineup, it wouldn't be surprising for that to come at the expense of either Wade or J.D. Davis.

  • Giants' Wilmer Flores: Homers in extra-innings loss

Flores went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Monday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Diamondbacks.

Flores ends July on a five-game hitting streak, and he batted .383 (31-for-81) with six homers and 11 RBI in the month. The infielder got the nod at third base Monday, though he may be slipping back into a utility role with LaMonte Wade (back) returning to action following a three-game absence over the weekend. Flores is slashing .298/.354/.537 with 14 homers, 35 RBI, 33 runs scored and 16 doubles over 268 plate appearances this year -- he's done well enough to see more than just a short-side platoon role even when the Giants are mostly healthy in the infield.

  • LaMonte Wade 1B | CHW

Giants' LaMonte Wade: Back in lineup

Wade (back) is starting at first base and batting leadoff Monday against Arizona, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Back tightness has kept Wade out of San Francisco's lineup for each of its last three games, but the 29-year-old is set to return for Monday's series opener with the D-backs. Wade has been in a bit of a slump at the plate lately, slashing just .192/.364/.192 across 33 plate appearances since the All-Star break.

  • Carlos Santana 1B | ARI

Brewers' Carlos Santana: Cranks first homer with Milwaukee

Santana went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 8-6 loss to Atlanta.

Santana is now just 1-for-7 since he was traded to the Brewers, but he made his first hit count, homering off AJ Smith-Shawver in the third inning Sunday to give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead. The 37-year-old Santana has cooled off after a fast start to the season -- he's batting just .185 (15-for-81) in 23 games since the beginning of July. Overall, the veteran first-baseman is slashing .233/.321/.415 with 13 homers, 54 RBI, 46 runs scored and six stolen bases through 402 plate appearances this season.

  • Alec Bohm 3B | PHI

Phillies' Alec Bohm: Three hits, homer Sunday

Bohm went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Sunday's loss against Pittsburgh.

Bohm opened the scoring with a two-run homer off Rich Hill in the fourth inning, his 10th of the year and first in 22 games. Despite the lack of power, Bohm's been fairly productive recently, going 11-for-32 (.344) over his last eight games. The 26-year-old first baseman is now slashing .284/.337/.420 with 65 RBI, 45 runs scored and three stolen bases across 377 plate appearances this season.

  • Dodgers' Freddie Freeman: Matches career high in steals

Freeman went 2-for-3 with a stolen base in Sunday's 9-0 loss to the Reds.

Freeman was the Dodgers' best player Sunday -- he was the only one to pick up multiple hits. The steal was his 13th of the season, matching his career high from last year. The first baseman ran more early in 2023, but he's notched just two thefts since the start of July despite hitting .359 this month. Freeman is at a stellar .329/.409/.575 slash line with 21 home runs, 73 RBI and 89 runs scored through 104 contests.

  • Joey Votto 1B | TOR

Reds' Joey Votto: Drives in three Sunday

Votto went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double and three RBI in Sunday's 9-0 win over the Dodgers.

Votto launched a two-run blast in the third inning and tacked on another run with an RBI double in the ninth. This was the veteran's second multi-hit effort in 15 games since the All-Star break, a span in which he's batting a meager .137 (7-for-51). Despite the poor hitting, Votto's path to playing time could be steadier while Jonathan India (foot) is on the injured list, a move that is likely to clear up a logjam throughout the Reds' infield and designated hitter positions. Votto is slashing .194/.310/.481 with nine homers, 25 RBI, 12 runs scored and four doubles through 126 plate appearances this season.
