  • Joey Votto 1B | TOR

Reds' Joey Votto: Continues homer binge

Votto went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs, three RBI and two walks in Wednesday's win over the Cubs.

The veteran kicked off the scoring in the contest with a solo home run in the second inning and later slugged a two-run shot to center field in the ninth. The pair of long balls extended Votto's streak of games with at least one homer to five, tying a franchise record. Over that span, all seven of his hits have left the yard, accounting for 12 RBI. Votto's 19 homers are the most he has hit in a season since he slugged 36 long balls in 2017.

  • Garrett Cooper 1B | ATL

Marlins' Garrett Cooper: Set for season-ending surgery

Cooper will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a partial UCL tear in his left elbow, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

Cooper landed on the injured list July 19 with a sprained left elbow, and he'll opt to undergo surgery after being evaluated by multiple doctors. The procedure carries a 3-to-4 month recovery timeline, so he should be healthy for the start of spring training in February if all goes well in his recovery.

  • C.J. Cron 1B | BOS

Rockies' C.J. Cron: Held out Wednesday

Cron (groin) is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Angels, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.

Cron was pulled from Tuesday's contest with groin discomfort and will be sidelined for at least one game. Joshua Fuentes will work at first base in his place while Connor Joe serves as the designated hitter.

  • Donovan Solano 1B | TEX

Giants' Donovan Solano: Out of Wednesday's lineup

Solano is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Solano is 3-for-20 with seven strikeouts over his past six games and will take a seat Wednesday. Wilmer Flores will cover the keystone while Jason Vosler starts at third base.

  • LaMonte Wade 1B | CHW

    Giants' LaMonte Wade: Sitting Wednesday

Wade (lower leg) is not in the lineup Wednesday versus the Dodgers, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

Wade exited Tuesday's contest with a bruised right lower leg and will rest for at least one game. Darin Ruf will work at first base in his place Wednesday.

  • Dominic Smith 1B | ATL

Mets' Dominic Smith: Retreats to bench

Smith isn't starting Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Smith will get a chance to reset after he went 0-for-10 with a walk and a strikeout across the last four games. Kevin Pillar will start in left field and bat eighth.

  • Josh Bell DH | MIN

Nationals' Josh Bell: Clubs 16th homer

Bell went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk during Tuesday's 6-4 win at Philadelphia.

The first baseman started the scoring with a three-run shot during the opening frame, and teammate Juan Soto added a three-run blast during the second inning to double the tally. Bell endured a horrible start to the season but is hitting .278/.335/.515 in 70 games since the start of May, bringing his season line to .248/.309/.469. On the season he has 16 home runs, 14 doubles, 51 RBI and 46 runs.

  • Andrew Vaughn 1B | MIL

White Sox's Andrew Vaughn: Starts in right field Tuesday

Vaughn started in right field and went 1-for-4 in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Royals.

Vaughn, who had played mostly in left field this season, moved across the outfield to accommodate the return of Eloy Jimenez. This was his first start and second appearance as a right fielder. White Sox manager Tony La Russa said he didn't expect Jimenez's return to cost Vaughn at-bats, and he meant it. It's unclear if Vaughn will be the primary right fielder going forward, or if that could change when Luis Robert (hip) returns. Although Robert is a center fielder, La Russa could opt for a better fielder in right, like Adam Engel or Brian Goodwin. In that event, Vaughn could get regular at-bats as the designated hitter.

  • Nate Lowe DH | CIN

Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Knocks in two, steals base

Lowe went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Diamondbacks.

Lowe's ground rule double in the fourth inning knotted the game at two apiece before Joey Gallo hit a monster three-run home run as part of a five-run inning. That was all the scoring for Texas, which snapped a 12-game losing streak. For Lowe, the steal was his fifth of the season, and this was the second time in four games he's knocked in multiple runs.

  • Kole Calhoun 1B | CLE

Diamondbacks' Kole Calhoun: Moves to leadoff

Calhoun batted leadoff and went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Rangers.

Calhoun has slumped since coming off the injured list July 10, going 4-for-37; however, manager Torey Lovullo opted to slot the veteran into the leadoff spot in order to get him as many at-bats as possible. That serves the dual purpose of getting him more at-bats with which to dial in his swing, which, if it leads to improvement, would make Calhoun more attractive leading up to the non-waiver trade deadline.
