  • Joey Votto 1B | TOR

Reds' Joey Votto: Undergoes season-ending surgery

Votto was placed on the 60-day injured list Friday after undergoing surgery to repair his torn left rotator cuff, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

This officially ends Votto's 16th season in the majors. It was his worst campaign to date by fWAR (-0.7) and wRC+ (93). Votto slashed .205/.319/.370 with 11 home runs, 31 runs and 41 RBI in 91 games and is under contract through the 2023 season.

  • Nick Pratto 1B | TEX

Royals' Nick Pratto: Takes seat Friday

Pratto isn't starting Friday against the Rays.

Pratto has sat against most left-handed pitchers since joining the Royals, and he'll get a day off with southpaw Shane McClanahan starting for Tampa Bay on Friday. Vinnie Pasquantino is shifting to first base while Brent Rooker serves as the designated hitter.

  • Darick Hall 1B | PIT

    Phillies' Darick Hall: Sitting Friday

Hall will sit Friday versus the Mets.

Hall will get a day off after he went 2-for-8 with a solo home run over the last two games of the series against the Reds. Kyle Schwarber (calf) will return to the lineup Friday at designated hitter and bat leadoff in the series opener.

  • Yandy Diaz 1B | TB

Rays' Yandy Diaz: Not starting Friday

Diaz (knee) isn't starting Friday against the Royals.

Diaz exited Thursday's series opener against Kansas City due to a sore left knee, and he'll be held out of the lineup for at least one game. Whether he's available off the bench remains to be seen, but Isaac Paredes will take over at the hot corner and bat eighth.

  • Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt: Doubles twice Thursday

Goldschmidt went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored in Thursday's 13-0 win over the Rockies.

Thursday's game was the third time in August that Goldschmidt has contributed multiple extra-base hits. The first baseman is batting .380 through 15 games this month, adding five home runs, six doubles, 16 RBI and 13 runs scored. He continues to be one of baseball's best hitters -- he's sporting a .335/.418/.627 slash line through 111 contests.

  • Nate Lowe 1B | CIN

Rangers' Nathaniel Lowe: Breaks open game with HR

Lowe went 1-for-3 with a walk, a three-run home run and a second run scored in Thursday's 10-3 win over Oakland.

Lowe's fifth-inning homer gave the Rangers separation on their way to a lopsided victory. It was his 17th home run in 113 games, leaving him one shy of the career high he set in 2021 over 157 games. It's been a tumultuous week in Arlington -- both manager Chris Woodward and general manager Jon Daniels were given pink slips -- but that didn't distract Lowe, who is 7-for-18 in five games this week. He's slashed .353/.405/.588 over 27 games since the All-Star break, all while batting no lower than fifth in the order.

  • Yandy Diaz 1B | TB

Rays' Yandy Diaz: Exits with knee soreness

Diaz was removed from Thursday's game against Kansas City with left knee soreness, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports.

Diaz exited in the seventh inning after he appeared to suffer the injury while rounding third base. Prior to his departure, Diaz powered the Rays' offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored. There's no timetable for his potential return to the lineup, but Yu Chang is a potential beneficiary of any extended absence for Diaz.

  • Giants' Wilmer Flores: Not in Thursday's lineup

Flores is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Diamondbacks, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Flores has an .837 OPS through 15 games in August and will take a seat for Thursday's series finale. J.D. Davis will bat sixth as the designated hitter.

  • LaMonte Wade 1B | CHW

Giants' LaMonte Wade: Goes yard in Wednesday's loss

Wade went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Over his last nine games, Wade has gone 7-for-22 (.318) with five homers and two doubles. That burst of power has lifted his season slash line to .202/.318/.477 with eight long balls, 22 RBI, 15 runs scored, four doubles and a triple through 130 plate appearances. With Luis Gonzalez optioned to Triple-A Sacramento, there's more playing time to be had in right field, and it appears Wade should be a fixture there versus right-handed pitchers. He could also see more chances against southpaws, but he only has a .174 OPS in 18 plate appearances against lefties this year.

  • Keston Hiura 2B | LAD

Brewers' Keston Hiura: Collects fifth stolen base

Hiura went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Dodgers.

Despite not having a full-time role with the Brewers at any point this season and having spent chunks of the year in the minors, Hiura has been a sneaky source of counting stats with 10 home runs and five steals across 160 plate appearances. After a quality showing at the plate Wednesday while serving as the Brewers' designated hitter, Hiura will stick in the lineup for Thursday's series finale, batting sixth and manning first base.
