Gurriel was placed on the paternity list Friday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Joe Perez was called up by the Astros ahead of Friday's game against the Angels, while Aledmys Diaz should see increased playing time at first base while Gurriel is unavailable.

Pete Alonso 1B | BAL
Mets' Pete Alonso: Good to go
Alonso (mouth) will bat cleanup and play first base Friday against the Nationals.

Evan White 1B | LAA
Mariners' Evan White: On injured list as expected
White (groin) hit the 10-day injured list Friday.
White underwent surgery for a sports hernia in late March. His recovery timeline remains unclear. The fact that he hit the 10-day injured list rather than the 60-day could indicate that the Mariners expect him healthy before early June, though the team could of course shift him to the 60-day injured list whenever they need to open a 40-man roster spot.

Tigers' Spencer Torkelson: Batting eighth in MLB debut
Torkelson is starting at first base and batting eighth in Friday's season-opening matchup with the White Sox, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

The 22-year-old finished last season at Triple-A Toledo and didn't miss a beat, hitting .238/.350/.531 with 11 home runs and 27 RBI in 40 games, and he'll work as the Tigers' primary first baseman in his rookie campaign.

Diamondbacks' Drew Ellis: Logs two plate appearances
Ellis went 0-for-2 before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning of Thursday's 4-2 win over the Padres.
Ellis got the start at third base with Josh Rojas (oblique) on the shelf for the first few weeks of the season. Sergio Alcantara replaced Ellis at third after Cooper Hummel walked as a pinch hitter in the seventh. For now, Ellis and Alcantara will share the hot corner. The organization acquired another player that can play third Thursday, picking up Yonny Hernandez from the Rangers, but he'll open at Triple-A Reno.

Mets' Pete Alonso: Escapes with cut lip
Alonso suffered a swollen and cut lip but no concussion after being hit by a pitch in Thursday's game against Nationals, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.
Alonso was hit by a pitch in the shoulder in the ninth inning and immediately exited the game. However, the primary damage came when the ball deflected off his helmet, which then made contact with his face and cut his lip. The expectation is that Alonso will be in the lineup Friday against the Nationals, though that will still be worth confirming.

Mets' Pete Alonso: Exits early after HBP
Alonso exited Thursday's game against the Nationals after being hit by a pitch on the shoulder in the ninth inning, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Though he exited with trainers, Alonso appeared to be fine and walked off the field under his own power. He was also spotted in the dugout after the incident with ice applied to his mouth, further confirmation that he dodged a serious injury. Nevertheless, Alonso should be considered day-to-day and isn't guaranteed to be in the lineup Friday.
