  • Matt McLain SS | CIN

Reds' Matt McLain: Placed on injured list

The Reds placed McLain (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list Tuesday due to a left hamstring strain.

McLain was reportedly available off the bench Monday, but the Reds will instead err on the side of caution and give him more time to recover while on the injured list. He hasn't played since Saturday, so he'll be eligible to return from the IL in a week. While he's out, Santiago Espinal could benefit from increased playing time at second base, or the Reds could move Gavin Lux to the keystone from left field.

  • Jeff McNeil 2B | ATH

Mets' Jeff McNeil: On cusp of rehab assignment

Manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that McNeil (oblique) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment later this week, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

The 33-year-old has been ramping up his rehab program and is nearly ready to see game action. McNeil suffered the low-grade oblique strain in mid-March and could make his season debut for the Mets within the next couple weeks.

  • Jeff McNeil 2B | ATH

Mets' Jeff McNeil: Still aiming for April return

McNeil (oblique) is traveling to Florida to ramp up his rehab program and still hopes to be activated before the end of April, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

McNeil had been rehabbing in New York, but he's headed to warmer temperatures as he accelerates his program, which includes taking batting practice on the field Tuesday for the first time since his oblique injury. The Mets haven't provided word yet regarding when he might be ready for a rehab assignment, but it shouldn't be long. McNeil will take over as the Mets' primary second baseman once he's cleared to return from the 10-day injured list.

  • Tim Tawa 2B | ARI

Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Makes second start

Tawa started at second base and went 0-for-3 in Monday's 5-1 loss to the Orioles.

Tawa made his second start in the three games since being called up from Triple-A Reno in the wake of Ketel Marte's hamstring injury. He's gone hitless over six at-bats since singling in his first MLB plate appearance. Tawa was instrumental in ending Zac Gallen's night by not receiving the ball cleanly on a potential inning-ending double play, which allowed a run to score and led to Ryan Mountcastle's two-run single that led to Gallen getting the hook.

  • Padres' Jake Cronenworth: Goes deep in win

Cronenworth went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk Monday in a 5-4 win versus the Athletics.

Cronenworth helped the Padres get off to a quick start, launching a two-run blast to right-center field in the first inning. It was the second long ball of the season for the infielder, who has reached base safely in nine of his 11 games so far. Cronenworth is slashing a steady .265/.405/.500 through 42 plate appearances.

  • Matt McLain SS | CIN

Reds' Matt McLain: Available off bench Monday

McClain (hamstring) is not in the Reds' starting lineup against the Giants on Monday but is available off the bench, Pat Brennan of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

McClain will be out of the starting lineup for a fourth consecutive game due to left hamstring soreness, but he could be used as a pinch hitter Monday. Gavin Lux will start at second base and bat out of the cleanup spot against Giants right-hander Logan Webb.

  • Nico Hoerner 2B | CHC

Cubs' Nico Hoerner: Receiving Monday off

Hoerner is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers.

Hoerner will receive a breather after he started the past seven games while going 11-for-28 (.393 average) with six runs, five RBI and six stolen bases during that stretch. Jon Berti will spell Hoerner at second base and will bat eighth.

  • Brett Baty 3B | NYM

Mets' Brett Baty: Giving way to Acuna at keystone

Baty is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins.

Baty looked to be holding down the strong side of a platoon at second base with Luisangel Acuna while Jeff McNeil (oblique) is on the shelf, but Baty has now hit the bench in three of the Mets' last six matchups with right-handed pitchers. Manager Carlos Mendoza may just be looking to keep both young hitters involved while the Mets are in the midst of a long stretch of facing right-handers, but Baty hasn't helped his case for seeing the majority of the playing time at the keystone either. He enters Monday's contest having gone just 2-for-21 (.095 average) with no walks and eight strikeouts through the Mets' first nine games of the season.

  • Jared Triolo 3B | PIT

Pirates' Jared Triolo: Lands on IL with back injury

The Pirates placed Triolo on the 10-day injured list Monday with a lumbar spine strain, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

The team had viewed Triolo as day-to-day, but the injury is apparently now considered significant enough to keep him out at least until mid-April. Triolo has started half of the Pirates' 10 games so far, bouncing around between second base, first base and third base. Tsung-Che Cheng was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to replace Triolo on the active roster.

  • Peyton Stovall 2B | CIN

Reds' Peyton Stovall: Nursing hamstring injury

Stovall was held back in extended spring training due to a hamstring injury and will be assigned to High-A Dayton when cleared, Jonathan Mayo of MLB Pipeline reports.

Stovall is a bat-first second baseman that Cincinnati selected in the fourth round last year. He played briefly at Single-A after signing, and while he walked more than he struck out, he slugged .333 with zero home runs in 16 games.
