Giants' J.D. Davis: Inks one-year deal

Davis signed a one-year, $4.21 million contract with the Giants on Friday to avoid arbitration, source reports.

Davis started slow for the Mets last season, but was able to slash .263/.361/.496 with the Giants after being traded at the deadline. It's unclear how exactly Davis will fit in the Giants' lineup in 2023, whether it's at third base or as the designated hitter, but he still figures to get his fair share of at-bats next season.

  • Abraham Toro 1B | BOS

Brewers' Abraham Toro: Inks one-year deal

Toro signed a one-year, $1.25 million contract with the Brewers on Friday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

It's a nice little raise for Toro, who was eligible for arbitration for the first time as a Super Two qualifier. The 26-year-old was acquired via trade from the Mariners last month and will compete for the Brewers' second base job in 2023.

  • Nick Senzel 3B | LAD

Reds' Nick Senzel: Avoids arbitration with Cincy

Senzel (toe) signed a one-year, $1.95 million contract with the Reds on Friday to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Senzel's 2022 season ended in September with a fractured toe that later required surgery when it didn't heal properly. His status for the start of spring training is in question and it's fair to wonder at this point whether a breakout will ever happen for the 2016 No. 2 overall pick.

  • Nick Madrigal 3B | LAA

    Cubs' Nick Madrigal: Avoids arbitration

Madrigal and the Cubs agreed on a one-year, $1.225 million contract Friday to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

The 25-year-old struggled to stay healthy in 2022, batting .249 with seven doubles, seven RBI, 19 runs and three stolen bases over 209 at-bats in 59 games with the Cubs. With the addition of Dansby Swanson this offseason, Madrigal does not have direct path to a starting spot in the infield, though he will likely rotate in and out of the lineup in a variety of spots including designated hitter in 2023.

  • Evan Longoria 3B | ARI

    Diamondbacks' Evan Longoria: Joining D-backs

Longoria (thumb) agreed to a one-year contract with the Diamondbacks on Friday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Despite being one of the older players in the game, Longoria still managed to put together a respectable 2022 campaign. He slashed .244/.315/.451 through 298 plate appearances with San Francisco, with a few IL stints mixed in throughout the season. He will likely split time at third base with Josh Rojas and get the nod to start whenever the D-backs face a lefty on the mound.

  • Jean Segura 3B | CLE

Marlins' Jean Segura: Set to play third base

Manager Skip Schumaker said Thursday the Marlins plan to play Segura at third base after the team signed him to a two-year, $17 million contract, Jim Bowden of The Athletic reports.

It's not a surprise the 32-year-old won't be at the keystone since Miami already has Jazz Chisholm, and Segura will end up at the hot corner rather than shortstop. Segura has played in just 24 games at third base during his 11-year career, all of which came in 2020 with the Phillies. The veteran infielder had a .277/.336/.387 slash line with 10 home runs and 13 stolen bases in 98 contests last season.

  • Jean Segura 3B | CLE

    Marlins' Jean Segura: Joining Marlins

Segura signed a two-year, $17 million contract with the Marlins on Wednesday, Hector Gomez of Z101Digital.com reports.

Segura slashed .277/.336/.387 over 387 plate appearances in 2022 for Philadelphia, though most of his value lies with his glove. Segura has almost exclusively played second base the past two years; however, the presence of Jazz Chisholm will likely lead to Segura shifting over to shortstop or third base.

  • Mike Moustakas 3B | CHW

Reds' Mike Moustakas: DFA'd by Cincy

Moustakas (calf) was designated for assignment by the Reds on Thursday.

The 34-year-old missed the final six weeks of last season with a calf injury, and he won't be returning to the Reds in 2023. Cincinnati still owes Moustakas $22 million -- $18 million for his 2023 salary and a $4 million buyout for 2024 -- but the team decided it was time to move on after he posted a .212/.289/.356 slash line over the past two years. Given the remaining contract, Moustakas is likely to go unclaimed on waivers and should hit free agency.

  • Mike Moustakas 3B | CHW

Reds' Mike Moustakas: May not be part of team's plans

Moustakas (calf) doesn't appear to be in line for a regular role with the Reds in 2023, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "He's on our roster," general manager Nick Krall said, when asked about Moustakas at a recent fan event.

The Reds were willing to eat outfielder Shogo Akiyama's contract last season when they determined that Akiyama no longer had a role with the team, and that might be the same path they take with Moustakas this season. A healthy Joey Votto (shoulder) should reclaim everyday duties at first base during the upcoming season, and Moustakas' other avenues to playing time at designated hitter or third base could also be blocked with Cincinnati presumably keen on giving some of its younger hitters opportunities. Before his 2022 campaign came to an end in late August with a left calf strain, Moustakas posted a .640 OPS -- the second-worst mark of his career -- and a career-high 26.3 percent strikeout rate over 285 plate appearances.

  • Abraham Toro 1B | BOS

Brewers' Abraham Toro: Shipped to Milwaukee

Toro and Jesse Winker were acquired by the Brewers from the Mariners on Friday in exchange for Kolten Wong and cash considerations, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Toro was acquired by the Mariners from the Astros at the 2021 trade deadline, and he's now on the move once again. The 25-year-old played in a career-high 109 games last season, but he struggled offensively with a .185/.239/.324 slash line, 10 home runs and 35 RBI. He's under team control through 2026 and should have the chance to secure a starting spot in the lineup during spring training, with Wong's departure opening up the job at second base.
