    Yan Gomes one of better Indians hitters despite recent slump

    Catcher Yan Gomes has been one of the most productive hitters in the Indians lineup this season - but that's not saying much. Even a recent slump doesn't change that status.

    Gomes peaked at .280 after starting May on a 19-for-59 stretch in which he hit safely in 12 of 15 games. He had three home runs and 10 RBI during one 10-game period early in the month. But he needed a single in the ninth inning Wednesday to halt an 0-for-11 skid.

    He boasts a decent .265/.314/.438 stat line on the season with six homers, 19 RBI and 23 runs scored for the impotent Indians.

  • Johnny Monell heading to Dodgers organization

    The Dodgers have acquired catcher Johnny Monell from the Orioles, a source has told SB Nation. What was provided in return has yet to be revealed.

    The 28-year-old Monell has struggled at Triple-A Norfolk this season. He owns a stat line of .209/.280/286. He has earned just eight at-bats in the major leagues during his career.

    He has been assigned to Triple-A Albuquerque, according to the Baltimore Sun.

    Indians hot-hitting catcher Yan Gomes has been given the day off for the Wednesday game against Tigers ace Max Scherzer. Carlos Santana will replace him behind the plate with Lonnie Chisenhall playing third.

    Gomes has hit safely in seven of his last games and is 11 for 32 during that stretch. He has raised his batting average from .255 to .277 in the last two weeks.

    Gomes smacked a three-run home run in the ninth inning that ended up being his team's final runs in a huge offensive effort. He has hit .269/.313/.487 with six home runs and 17 RBI in 119 at-bats.
