  • Rays' Christian Bethancourt: On bench amid slump

Bethancourt is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Yankees.

Rene Pinto will start at catcher for the Rays and bat ninth. Bethancourt has gone 1-for-21 (.048) over his last nine games and is slashing just .130/.200/.152 in 50 plate appearances since the beginning of July.

  • Yankees' Kyle Higashioka: On bench Wednesday

Higashioka is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Rays.

Ben Rortvedt will start behind the plate and bat ninth after Higashioka went 0-for-3 with a strikeout Tuesday as his season slash line fell to .225/.259/.376. Higashioka should still be the Yankees' primary catcher the rest of the way with Jose Trevino (wrist) officially done for the year.

  • David Fry C | CLE

Guardians' David Fry: Could gain playing time

Fry will start at first base and bat fifth in Wednesday's game at Houston.

Fry will be making his second consecutive start at first base while Josh Naylor (side) remains out of the lineup, but the Guardians could have room in the starting nine for both players once Naylor is back to 100 percent health. Naylor and Josh Bell had been sharing first base and designated hitter duties this season, but the Guardians now have a permanent opening in the lineup after trading Bell to the Marlins on Tuesday. In addition to first base, Fry has picked up starts at catcher, third base, left field and right field, so he'll have multiple pathways to regular playing time even if the Guardians choose to rotate a number of players at the DH spot rather than settling on a primary option.

  • Astros' Martin Maldonado: Takes seat Wednesday

Maldonado is not in the lineup Wednesday versus the Guardians.

Yainer Diaz will start behind the plate and bat eighth after Maldonado caught Framber Valdez's no-hitter Tuesday night against Cleveland. Maldonado is the better defensive option of the two Houston backstops, but Diaz carries far more offensive upside.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Nearing rehab assignment

Angels manager Phil Nevin said Wednesday that O'Hoppe (shoulder) is on track to begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

O'Hoppe advanced to taking live batting practice this past weekend as he continues to make a swift recovery from April surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder. He'll likely stay on the rehab assignment for close to the maximum 20 days to get fully back into form offensively and defensively, but the promising young catcher could be a contributor again for the playoff-hunting Angels by the end of August.

  • Matt Thaiss C | BOS

Angels' Matt Thaiss: Sits for day game

Thaiss is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Thaiss will take a seat for the matinee game after he was behind the plate for all eight innings of the Angels' 5-1 loss Tuesday night. Chad Wallach will catch for starting pitcher Lucas Giolito in the series finale.

  • Jake Rogers C | DET

    Tigers' Jake Rogers: Rests Wednesday

Rogers is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates.

He'll take a seat for the day game after a night game, allowing Eric Haase to get the starting nod behind the plate. Rogers went 1-for-8 with a double and a run scored while starting in both of Detroit's last two contests.

  • Danny Jansen C | TEX

Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Swats 15th homer

Jansen went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 13-3 loss to the Orioles.

He took Kyle Bradish deep in the second inning to get the Jays on the board. Jansen has gone yard three times in his last five starts, and he's now tied his career high with 15 homers on the season while already establishing a new personal best with 48 RBI. His .227/.289/.486 slash line, however, still limits his appeal in shallower fantasy formats.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Homers in return

McGuire went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Mariners.

McGuire missed about six weeks with an oblique injury. He had no trouble getting the ball in the air in his return, popping a solo shot and a sacrifice fly to contribute to the offense. The catcher is slashing a decent .269/.310/.380 with one homer, 13 RBI, 12 runs scored and nine doubles through 41 contests this season. He's likely to remain behind Connor Wong on the depth chart going forward.

  • Mitch Garver DH | SEA

Rangers' Mitch Garver: Goes deep in victory

Garver went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 2-0 win over the White Sox.

Garver got the scoring started in the fifth inning, smashing a solo shot off Jesse Scholtens to give Texas the lead. The 32-year-old has started each of the last seven games for the Rangers, going 6-for-18 with two homers, four RBI and four runs scored during that span. Garver should continue to see regular playing time with Jonah Heim on the injured list.
