Giants' Joey Bart: MRI reveals Grade 1 sprain

An MRI on Friday revealed that Bart has a Grade 1 left groin strain, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Grade 1 is the mildest strain, so this is good news for Bart. The catcher was placed on the injured list before Friday's game against the Marlins, and he has a chance to return to the lineup before the end of May.

  • Nick Fortes C | TB

Marlins' Nick Fortes: Takes breather Friday

Fortes is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Giants, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports.

Fortes has been alternating backstop duties with Jacob Stallings, and Fortes will take a seat on the bench for Friday's series opener as Stallings hits eighth and starts behind the plate.

  • Gary Sanchez C | MIL

    Mets' Gary Sanchez: Officially promoted

The Mets selected Sanchez from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday.

After signing a minor-league deal with the Mets on May 9, Sanchez's promotion will prevent him from exercising his opt-out clause. The 30-year-old backstop holds a .671 OPS in Triple-A this season but has excelled since joining the Mets' Triple-A team, slashing .308/.514/.500 through 37 plate appearances. Sanchez will likely be used off the bench until Tomas Nido (eye) and Omar Narvaez (calf) return from their injuries.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Ready to go Friday

Alvarez (undisclosed) is back behind the plate and will bat ninth Friday against the Guardians.

Alvarez missed Thursday's win with an undisclosed injury, but he appears ready to go for the series opener with Cleveland. The catcher has gone 2-for-17 over his last five contests, though both hits went for extra bases.

  • Tomas Nido C | DET

Mets' Tomas Nido: Cleared for rehab assignment

Nido (eye) was cleared to begin a rehab assignment Friday with Single-A St. Lucie.

Nido was placed on the injured list May 10 due to lingering issues with dryness in both of his eyes, but that has been solved via punctal plugs and medicated eye drops. It's unclear how he'll eventually fit back into the mix at catcher with the Mets, who promoted Gary Sanchez on Friday to back up Francisco Alvarez.

  • Mets' Michael Perez: Optioned to Triple-A

The Mets optioned Perez to Triple-A Syracuse on Friday.

Gary Sanchez has been selected to the major-league roster in a corresponding move to back up Francisco Alvarez at catcher and likely also cycle in at DH. Perez was 4-for-7 (.571) during his one-week stay with New York.

Giants' Joey Bart: Lands on IL with groin strain

Bart was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left groin strain.

Bart dealt with an issue on the other side of his groin last month, but this appears to be a new injury. He'll be eligible to return later this month, although it's not clear at this point whether he'll be ready at that time. Patrick Bailey is taking his roster spot and should share catching duties with Blake Sabol while Bart is out.

  • Giants' Patrick Bailey: Contract selected by Giants

Bailey had his contract selected by the Giants on Friday.

Bailey will join the major-league roster after he spent 14 games with Triple-A Sacramento, struggling to a .196 batting average with two homers, four RBI, five runs scored and a stolen base over 51 at-bats. The 23-year-old has yet to make his MLB debut, but he'll likely get that shot soon while operating behind Blake Sabol at catcher after Joey Bart (groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday.

  • Nick Fortes C | TB

Marlins' Nick Fortes: Nabs second steal

Fortes went 2-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Thursday's win over the Nationals.

It's the backstop's first multi-hit performance and first RBI since May 3. Fortes hasn't done much at the plate this season, slashing .210/.264/.247 through 87 plate appearances with one homer, two steals, six RBI and seven runs, and the playing time split behind the plate for Miami could be tipping back in favor of Jacob Stallings, who has started four of the last seven games.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Mashes two homers

Contreras went 2-for-5 with two homers and six RBI in Thursday's 16-8 win over the Dodgers.

Contreras opened the scoring for the Cardinals with a three-run shot in the third inning, and he provided insurance with another three-run homer in the eighth. It was the catcher's second multi-homer game of the season, as he has gone deep in just three different contests this season. He has a solid .772 OPS thanks to a .256 average and 12 doubles. He also ranks second among catchers with three stolen bases in 2023.
