  • Luke Maile C | KC

Brewers' Luke Maile: Optioned to Triple-A

Maile was optioned to Triple-A Nashville on Friday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

Maile had been serving as the Brewers' backup catcher while Manny Pina was out with an oblique injury. He'll head back to the minors now that Pina is ready to return.

  • Reds' Tucker Barnhart: Sits against southpaw

Barnhart will sit Friday against the Cardinals.

Barnhart has started just four times against lefties all season, so it's no surprise to see him hit the bench against Jon Lester here. Tyler Stephenson takes over behind the plate as usual.

  • Keibert Ruiz C | WAS

Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Not in lineup

Ruiz will not start Friday's game against Pittsburgh.

Ruiz has so far not been able to repeat his Triple-A success in the majors, going 3-for-28 at the plate since joining the Nationals' big-league roster in late August. Riley Adams takes over behind the plate Friday.

  • Braves' William Contreras: Rejoins big-league club

Atlanta recalled Contreras from Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday.

Contreras went 0-for-6 in his latest big-league stint and is hitting .196/.277/.372 in 166 plate appearances with Atlanta this season. He'll back up Travis d'Arnaud until Stephen Vogt (hip) returns from the injured list.

  • Tomas Nido C | DET

Mets' Tomas Nido: Nearing rehab assignment

Nido (thumb) could begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Syracuse this weekend, Justin Toscano of The Bergen Record reports.

Nido has been on the injured list since Aug. 31, so he's only expected to require a few rehab appearances before he's cleared to be activated. The team hasn't indicated what day the catcher will report to the minor-league club, but he'll be in the mix to rejoin the Mets sometime next week.

  • Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: On bench Thursday

Realmuto isn't starting Thursday's game against the Rockies, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Realmuto will have a chance to reset after he went 0-for-8 with an RBI, a stolen base and four strikeouts across the last two games. Rafael Marchan will start behind the dish and bat eighth.

  • Braves' Travis d'Arnaud: Day off Thursday

D'Arnaud is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against Washington.

D'Arnaud has homered four times in 17 games since returning from a thumb injury in mid-August, keeping him productive at the plate despite a .230 batting average. Stephen Vogt will catch Huascar Ynoa in his absence.

  • Will Smith C | LAD

Dodgers' Will Smith: Takes seat Thursday

Smith isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cardinals, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Smith started each of the last two games and went 4-for-7 with a homer, two runs and two RBI. Austin Barnes will start behind the dish and bat eighth.

  • Elias Diaz C | KC

Rockies' Elias Diaz: Cranks 16th homer

Diaz went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, two doubles and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 7-4 loss to San Francisco.

The catcher entered Wednesday's contest just 1-for-11 across six games in September prior to the three-hit outburst. Diaz has thrived with Colorado this year, swatting 16 homers with 35 RBI and 45 runs scored despite slashing just .232/.303/.461 across 314 plate appearances. Diaz's recent slump allowed Dom Nunez to earn a more even time behind the dish, but the latter hasn't been as consistent a hitter this year.

  • Padres' Victor Caratini: Catching for Yu Darvish

Caratini will start at catcher and bat eighth Wednesday against the Angels.

Caratini continues to serve as the personal catcher for Yu Darvish, who is on the mound Wednesday for the Friars. Beyond Darvish's starts, Caratini has struggled to pick up playing time behind No. 1 backstop Austin Nola since early August. Dating back to Aug. 1, Caratini has started in only 11 of the Padres' 32 games, slashing .175/.190/.225 with four runs and three RBI.
