  • Keibert Ruiz C | WAS

Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Sent to hospital after early exit

Ruiz was sent to the hospital due to swollen testicles after leaving Thursday's game against the Cardinals in the bottom of the sixth inning, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Ruiz was hit in the groin by a foul ball in the bottom of the second inning Thursday and appeared to be in considerable pain, but he was able to initially remain in the contest. He went 1-for-3 but was ultimately replaced defensively in the bottom of the sixth inning and sent to the hospital due to swelling. Ruiz is expected to travel back to Washington with the team, but it's not yet clear whether he'll be forced to miss additional time.

  • Cubs' Willson Contreras: MRI comes back clean

Contreras (ankle) underwent an MRI on Wednesday that didn't reveal anything too concerning, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Contreras' test results were consistent with an ankle sprain, and he's expected to rest for a few days prior to resuming baseball activities. It's possible the 30-year-old spends more than the minimum of 10 days on the injured list, but it doesn't appear as though he's dealing with a particularly significant injury.

  • Yan Gomes C | CHC

Cubs' Yan Gomes: Absent from Thursday's lineup

Gomes isn't starting Thursday against Cincinnati.

Gomes went 4-for-4 during Wednesday's loss to the Reds, but he'll take a seat for Thursday's series finale. P.J. Higgins is starting behind the plate and batting sixth.

  • Sam Huff C | BAL

Rangers' Sam Huff: Makes second straight start

Huff went 0-for-4 in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to Houston.

Huff started a second consecutive game at catcher, as primary backstop Jonah Heim has slumped the last month. After allowing five stolen bases in Tuesday's win over the Astros, Huff was tested just once Wednesday and threw out Christian Vazquez. For the season, Huff has caught just two of 22 attempted stealers.

  • Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk: Notches three hits Wednesday

Kirk went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI in a 4-1 win against Baltimore on Wednesday.

Kirk recorded three of Toronto's nine singles in the contest, and his fifth-inning knock resulted in the team's third run. This was the backstop's fourth straight game with an RBI, and he's gone 7-for-10 at the plate over the past two days. The hot stretch has pushed his batting average back over the .300 mark to .302.

  • Marlins' Jacob Stallings: Goes deep Wednesday

Stallings went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Phillies on Wednesday.

Stallings struck a solo homer to left field off Connor Brogdon in the ninth inning to pull Miami to within a run, though the comeback attempt ultimately fell short. Still, it was a positive performance for the backstop after he went 1-for-18 over his previous five games. The long ball was Stallings' first since Aug. 7 and just his fourth of the campaign after he slugged a career-best eight homers last season.
